Nuggets giving Dice $6 Mil to go back to the Pistons

Post#1 » by maxwellcu » Mon Nov 10, 2008 11:45 pm

After this amazing revelation the AI trade looks a lot less enticing.

Cost the team millions, and fails to provide the frontcourt depth that we thought was coming along with Billups.

Horrible.

Thats what happens when you trade for a player that has openly stated that he would rather retire than get traded

Trying to avoid the luxury tax meant more to our front office then the acquisition of Mcdyess. It was all pre-arranged. When the day comes and he retires, I hope he enjoys it. I know I will.

I really wish that he would've have stuck around and played for us, but the guy obviously had his mind made up. This should be the last straw in allowing this type of financial move. With the stranglehold Czar Stern has on this league, I'm shocked he hasn't closed this loophole. In the end, it does help our cap space, so maybe we can use the flexibility positively going forward.

Besides, we won the trade. AI will never win a championship, especially with the Lakers and Celts set to dominate the next few years.

ilmn, that draft pick you wanted is named Cheik Samb, who certainly wouldn't have been included if McD's intentions weren't known already.
I still like the trade. I would have liked to have seen the Nugs seriously try to shop McD to other teams trying to shop a longer term contract (see Gerald Wallace) and any contenders who would be willing to pay full retail (Supposedly he didn't want to play here because the Nugs "aren't contenders").
But they are getting close (within a million or so, yes?) to getting below the Lux line, which would make them receivers of the Tax money instead of payers. Anybody know what a cut of the Tax loot is worth? That is, what's the net dollar difference between having your payroll $1 under the Lux limit vs. having it $1 over? Last year's payout will do, just for comparison.
I'm guessing this means the FO is unlikely to use the big trade exception before next offseason. Of course next year, when more than half the teams in the league are trying to dump salary for the Class of '10, that TPE should be extremely valuable. Really, since we're not gonna be buyers that summer, using that TPE will be our version of Free Agency. It might seem like only the Zachs and Eddys can be had for the TPE, but next summer/fall (Nugs managed to cleverly 'extend' the expiration date on the bulk of that TPE in this trade, too) I'm guessing some good, not-too-old players who are slightly overpaid past '10 by non-contenders (again, think Gerald Wallace, for instance) will suddenly look less attractive than cap room and a pick to would-be shoppers.
It's also at least conceivable that there's a deal out there that not only gets the Nugs under the Lux this year, but also makes them a better team this year. I haven't figured out what it is yet, but it would almost certainly involve a package of Atkins & Hunter combined with positive assets (Kleiza, picks being most obvious) for a player(s) whose salary is enough under the salaries of Hunter, Atkins and, in this instance, Kleiza to get us under the Lux. It won't be easy. The amount of salary coming back would have to be in a pretty narrow range. But something like Hunter, Atkins, Kleiza and a pick for Sean Williams and Stro Swift or H,A,K and 2 picks for Darko and Kyle Lowry would be the kinda deal I'm talking about. I haven't looked at the numbers closely to know if those deals would work, but I'm pretty sure such a deal is at least possible. It's a shame Hunter and Atkins are both injured. they'd be a lot easier to deal if they had at least some present value. Anybody know if Chucky's making progress?
Whew, sorry so windy!

^^^^^ Buyout Hunter and bring him back as an assistant when he recovers and then use the savings to go get a couple of vets that can help out our bench. Juwan and someone else. Fazekas maybe, I dunno. That would cut the payroll a bit more and give us healthy bodies.

It was all pre-arranged... Don't blame Dyess. If Denver didn't agree to cut McDyess after the trade than the trade would have never happened in the 1st place...

No kidding. Is he really going to be rewarded when he signs with another team though? His contract was bought out and he potentialy gets a month-long vacation just to add to the money he was already making and he gets to make a point about how he was treated years ago. He's definitely not on the losing end......yet...

I agree, that huge loop hole is bs. The players shouldn't be allowed to return to their former team until the following season imo.

Just picking this as one to quote.. but question to anyone who knows.

Now that we know Stan won't even resign Howard to a vet min deal, because he wants to get under the tax, I'm guessing Stan wouldn't have made this trade unless they could have bought Dice out for 6 million. The question, once Dice resigns with a team, lets say it is for 1 million this season, doesn't Denver no longer have to pay Dice that million, which would put them under the tax, which is what Stan now wants?

Besides, we won the trade. AI will never win a championship, especially with the Lakers and Celts set to dominate the next few years.

So basically you judge this trade and beleive the Nuggets won on the notion that Iverson will "never win a championship" because of how the Lakers and Celtics are playing? How pathetic. Which proves peoples point that the Nuggets were never ready to contend in the first place, therefor never had any business making a trade for Iverson (or anyother star player for that matter). Basically wasted that mans time. The Nuggets basically went from having a PG, to trading for a combogaurd (without ever addressing the PG situation) to going back to a PG. Just went around in a circle. I have never seen anything more ridiculous. Then they didn't even keep McDeyss, becase he didnt want to play there (I dont blame him) and wants to return to Detroit, a franchise that actually is commited to trying to atleast contend every year.

I hope Billups will do well in Denver (and they dont waste his time) and at the very least try to help control that offense. Although Chauncy is from Denver, he said he cried when he was traded from the Pistons..he cant be happy getting traded from that team to the Nuggets. Other then that, I agree with Charles Barkeley that the Nuggets still arent in the top four teams in the West..so what differense does it make? I guess as long as that team makes that playoffs and actually wins more then one game, some of you will be content. With all due respect, I feel like some Nuggets fans need to worry about their own supposed "franchise player" and leave Iverson alone now..maybe if Melo would live up to even half of the hype some of you put him up to that Nuggets organization wouldn't have to go out and aquire other star players to try to save that franchise. Dont be mad at AI or McDeyss or Chauncy (because I know he'll turn into the scapegoat soon enough).. be mad at that Organization for being garbage and some of its players playing the game with no heart. Good luck with that. :D

Oh, and free JR Smith..that guy has potential!!

you guys have to understand, Dice comes here as a chess, and Billups too.
All Denver wants is to pay less tax.
