Breaking down the defense

Post#1 » by pickaxe » Sun Dec 21, 2008 5:01 pm

Ok, so we all know the defense has been bad recently. I just wanted to know what everyone thinks the defensive problem or problems are compared to the early defensiv gems we witnessed.

There are obvious things like lack of size and Melo's elbow and stupid jumpshots when they need to drive, turning the ball over like it's the first time they've dribbled a basketball. Is there anything else we're missing? Is it more of a lame offense that we're dealing with that is creating our defensive problems?

we switch too much and good teams have an easy job exploiting mismatches and/or finding the open man.

OUR PROBLEM DEFENSIVELY = Anthony Carter guarding Lebron (Freakin) James!

I also agree with Corona....we do switch a lot...even when we don't need to sometimes. I think we would be better off with "hedging" the ball handler to slow him down, and then returning to our man.... I guess that's just a coaches personal preference...but then again, our coach is a moron...

Also....Poor fundamentals....just horrendous... I can't count how many times I've seen a player pump fake at the 3 point line and watch a Nugget player go FLYING by after a failed attempt for the block.... Just horrible fundamental closeouts on shooters... GK needs to say....if I see that piss poor close out again, your coming out of the game... Other fundamentals are pretty poor....Boxing out is another thing I've noticed....Our "smalls" are horrible at boxing out for the boards, and we end up having these little shrimp guards grabbing O-boards all the time. Nene, Anderson, and Balkman are the only ones that I ever see block out.....Kmart is the worst at this... he always thinks that he can just out jump everyone...

Our lack of a good defensive Big Man, is also hurting us... We lack anyone that can guard the True Post players in the league (Yao, Timmy, Dwight, KG, Z, etc.) Just watching the job we did on Yao and Big Z, made me wanna cry....it was just pathetic....Granted Z was on fire....but they were both just getting any shot they wanted...

I was also thinking.....Remember when we had AI and he would pick up the ball handler at fullcourt....it would sometimes rush the other team, get us in a pace that we can play in, and that other teams struggle in...

I wouldn't say our Offense is to blame for our defensive woes....I would say the biggest contributing factors are Lack of Post defense, Poor Defensive Fundamentals, and an overall Piss Poor job of coaching.

The team doesn't seem to grasp the concept that every single possession is important. The best sign that GK is a terrible coach is the fact that we make a bad rotation, force a bad shot on offense, and then give up another easy basket. The team simply cannot limit its mistakes. We have constant terrible runs of 5 or 6 wasted defensive possessions. If we could just stop the bleeding after one bad series, we'd end up winning a lot of these games.

Except against Cleveland. They're just a lot better than us. Like a lot.

The title of this thread is breaking down the defense. What a perfect title because it is broke down  GK's gimmick D has once again been exposed. It will probably only be a matter of time before we scrap it again this year and start trying to run teams out of the gym with offense and no defense. It is also about time for GK to throw someone under the bus. Who will it be?

We switch on every single pick/screen. Other teams know that and can get any mismatch they want. Then when we double team, our defensive rotations are too slow as they swing the ball around and find the open man.

That pretty much describes it. Phoenix was doing both and letting Amare get a guard on him in the paint.

The switching defense philsophy is so stupid, i mean i understand the switch if the two guys were around the same size and can guard that postion just in case a switch occur. But we got billups switching on amare serveral times in the suns game and that was ridiculous.

I gotta agree with you guys, teams taking advantage of that is comical at times. I wonder sometimes....how did THAT happen, yet again.
