Is he worth $65 Mil over 3 years? If the NBA's cap changes, which it most certainly will, the Nuggets could be using a third of their salary on one player.
Don't get me wrong I love melo and want him to retire in denver but if he takes up that much cap room there won't be much hope in surrounding him with enough talent to win a championship.
The front office could be banking on the notion that maybe all salaries will take a certain percentage cut the way the NHL did a few years back and then they won't be on the hook for paying him all that money.

The problem is if we don't offer this deal, Melo will test the open market and will more than likely leave. Its a smart move on both ends to sign this deal now. If the new CBA constricts our cap because of signing Melo to an extention, its gonna do the same to all but a couple teams in the league. Other part that I would worry about with a new CBA, if Melo becomes a free agent, it might prevent us from bringing him back.

Exactly. Plus you're going to have at least 10-15 teams who hand out huge ass contracts, many of them max contracts, this summer...so we definitely wont be alone in that boat if it does happen.
It's definitely the right move, especially since we really don't have any other long term deals left past this year....right now, at least. And trying to get free agents to come here without Melo on board would be even harder than it already is.

We will have room...
KMart, Nene, JR, Billups all expire within the next 1-2 seasons.

I don't think Melo is worth the Max, but he's going to get it one way or the other. At least it's Melo and not someone like Lewis.

Melo is definetly worth the max. Problem is he does not have any veteran leadership to look up to. Many of you will say Billups but its very hard to look up to a person that your better than...He needs to be surrounded by right type of people...

All good points if we don't pay him someone else will plus all the free agents out there this year will be getting huge contracts too and he's on there level.
