The Denver Nuggets need a closer.

Post#1 » by um. » Sun May 13, 2012 11:51 am

Who's it going to be?

i think Denver is solid at the 1,2,4, and 5 if McGee resigns.

Gallo has me worried.
Wilson Chandler isn't anything special
I would love to see Brewer resigned too

What or who do you go after?

OJ Mayo?
James Harden?
Harrison Barnes?
maybe trade Ty for Brandon Jennings?
i think we have a lot of value with Gallo, Chandler, and Harrington.

But who do we pick up? Who else can be a legit closer given time on the Nuggets? What's available?

We closed fine in the playoffs, I just felt we got really unlucky in game 4 and 7 and didn't put in the effort to win in game 1. McGee getting subbed out early in the 4th due to asthma really killed our momentum and we just couldn't rebound after that (followed by Steve Blake making shots he never makes). And Ty showed he's pretty good in those situations in the regular season.

What this team needs are shooters. We basically played 70% of the season with no shooters off the bench so teams got away with playing zone defense or packing the paint. In my ideal off-season, we would be getting two very good shooters as a backup PG and backup SG. Brandon Rush (statistically he is perfect) and Delonte West would be my priorities.

If possible, I would also offer Chandler + fillers + #20 for a post big like Al Jefferson, but the Jazz probably won't bite. I've seen Chris Kaman suggested as a post option as well but he was terrible this season so I'm 50/50.

i trust ty to be the closer. he has the ability to break away from a defender and take an open jumper and can also get ahead of anybody. he just needs to add a few offensive moves to his arsenal, that way he keeps his defender guessing.

Having a "closer" is overrated.

Gallo is the man. He's constantly improving, this year for instance he is showing some glimpses of a mid-range game that he didn't have last year. If he keeps working on his body and on his game this summer, he's going to be a borderline all-star next year (like he was in the first part of this season).

I think Ty can be that player. He is going to improve if Andre leaves.

andre pretty much said he wants out, which is probably good. Julyan is more than capable of being a solid backup in this league. I think defensively he is a huge upgrade.

Gallo has injured his hands or wrist 2 years in a row and his outside shooting has suffered because of it. If you watch him shoot free throws he can obviously shoot. Just needs to stay healthy. Wish Moz played more. I think he is better than Kos. Wilson and Rudy coming back will help. This team is only a stud draft pick or a stud free agent away. The great thing is they are a team. Not a 1 man me first diva show.
My eyes glaze over when reading alternative stat (not advanced stat) narratives that go many paragraphs long. If you can not make your point in 2 paragraphs it may not be a great point. :D

Not nearly as sold on Julyan as you are. Most I see from him is being a good 3rd string pg/sg type that give us depth. If Dre leaves, I think we have to make a move to bring in someone else to take the minutes behind Ty, which may be less with a player that Karl isn't as comfortable with playing the 2.

I'm also not high on stone as Lawson's backup. We need a backup PG who is not afraid to shoot. Ideally someone who shoots 40% from 3.

I really like Stone as the third string guard. IMO he is our best perimeter defender. He is skinny, but so is corey. I think he makes better decisions with the ball than most of our players too.

Def don't think Danilo is that go-to guy we were hoping he'd become. He went from being the best shooter D'Antoni has ever seen, to this. Meh.
