Andre Miller Re-ups (Poll)

Post#1 » by Powder Blue » Mon Jul 2, 2012 10:19 pm

Wanted to break this from the Off-Season Thread...

Mark Spears in reporting Andre Miller signed for 3 years. He didn't state the financial side of the deal, someone else reported possibly 3 million a year for 3 years. I'll update the numbers when they surface. I wanted to list my view of the Pros and Cons that come along with his re-signing and see how the rest of you feel.

Pros:
-Plays hurt...Only guy to play all 66 games last year. He's not a liability due to age.
-Best lob passer in the NBA....We saw a glimpse of it in the playoffs, Should see a lot more of it with a Faried/Mcgee lineup.
-Proven vet....Say what you want about his game but you know you're going to get assists with Miller and he's gotta be a top 5 back-up PG in the league.
-Post play...He's a PG but still the best "back to the basket" player on the team.

Cons:
-Scary outside shooter...as in when he shoots we all cringe. Last year was one of his better years but it's still a bad shot from him outside 20 ft.
-Odd pace...Sometimes he'll run and pass, other times he walks the ball up the court. The game slows down when he's in.
-2 PG lineup..Although not his fault we are bound to see GK's favorite 2 PG lineup more next year
-Attitude...Some games he's a team player, other times he's taking bad shots in the 4th and pouting

Overall I'm cool with him re-signing. No way the Nuggets push the Lakers to 7 games without him. McGee's monster games happened because of Andre. Mcgee value to this squad goes up because Miller re-signed. There wasn't a better free agent option out there for us. Even better if Ujiri got a hometown discount.

I'll just cut and paste the post about this I made in the other thread a few minutes ago...

I don't understand all the hate and scapegoating Dre gets around here. The same people I see criticizing our lack of a half-court offense are the same people who want Miller gone because he slows the pace of the game, and it makes no sense. He was huge for our half-court offense, and he's great at setting guys up to score when we're not running the fast break. He's half the reason why McGee and Faried were so successful in the playoffs and he's going to play a huge role in their development over the next few years. He's also one of only two experienced veterans on a team full of youngsters - that's important.

I don't always agree with the way Karl utilizes him, but despite all of Andre's shortcomings, he's still the best backup point guard in the league. And if this contract really only pays him $3mil/year, it's an incredible steal and there's no reason anyone should be unhappy about it.

If it was for 15-20mpg then this would be okay.

You know under Karl he will get his 30 which messes a lot of things.

And the idea of keeping the same roster after another yet first round exit, when are we going to stop being content with just getting in the playoffs?

I think its a great signing at a great price. Andre is one of the most durable players in the history of the NBA, up there with Iron Man AC Green. He's an absolute warrior and brings the veteran leadership to this young squad that is needed. He ranked 8th in the league in assists last year - off the bench. He shot 44% and 81% which are decent numbers. As a starter he averaged 14 ppg and 10 apg with 47% shooting

After the All Star break, his minutes dropped to 25 per game, which is where I expect them to be this coming season, and I think with the emergence of Ty Lawson in the Playoffs, we wont need to see a lot of the 2 PG lineup that GK heavily relied on last year.

Dre is perfect for the 2nd unit, he really got Faried, Brewer and McGee easy baskets in transition and is perfect for lob passes and the half-court offense.

I feel Dre is all wrong for the Nuggets but I love asset retention and if it's for 3 million a year it's a great price. He won't play 30 mpg in perpetuity; at some point he will become a backup PG, which is fine.

This does make Andre easy to trade and after the Nuggets overpay for McGee he is the one guy that can make McGee look good. What is always flustrating about this team is that I really don't see a game plan to get the Nuggets out of the first round.

I knew 3 Mil a year was too low, Dre signed for closer to 5 a year. Fair value IMO.

"Matt Steinmetz, of CSNBayArea.com, is reporting that Andre Miller didn't received $9 million from the Nuggets over three years, but rather $14.6 million for three years. This is the first of the numbers that I've seen reported about 'Dre's contract and it was re-tweeted by respectable web writer Alex Kennedy. No word yet on if the last year is a team option or not."

Considering that Anthony Carter was once denver's backup PG, I'd say resigning Miller makes a lot of sense. He was probably the best backup PG in the league last season.

I can't lie, Miller is better then most backup point guards around. He can create offense with his elite court vision. He was huge for our half-court offense, setting up guys who're slow or just can't create for themselves. Ty Lawson's offensive abilities compliment Miller's passing when Lawson sits out for an extended period of time. For the deal we've got him on, I'm content with his presence.
