Keep Brewer or Trade him?

Post#1 » by Ice32 » Thu Dec 13, 2012 9:52 pm

Its pretty clear that CBrew is playing for a contract - his numbers in December have been fantastic:

24.3 mins, 55% FG, 36% 3PT, 2.8 rebs, 1.2 stls and 17.0 pts

Overall, hes put up decent numbers off the bench, he's 5th in scoring, 2nd in steals, 3rd in PER. Top 40 in the NBA in points per 48 mins, tied for 35th in made 3 pointers. Has improved his shooting percentages a great deal - 45% FG and 37% 3PT. He has probably been one of the more consistent players on the team so far in 23 games.

He has said that he would love to stay in Denver, and would probably be happy with the bench spark plug role. I would think that 3 years for 10 million is good value. However, based on his production and the fact that he's a FA, he will probably get in the mix of 3-4 years at 12-15 million, more than Masai would want to offer considering Denver will be over 72 million in salary next season.

Do we keep him on the team for the season with the risk that he will leave, or do we trade him whilst his value is high and get something in return?

I think you keep him unless an offer comes up that just can't be refused. He is so important to the team and has been playing so well and is one of those guys like Faried that just seems to elevate the team's energy and enthusiasm when he's on the court. And Karl absolutely loves him so you know he will fight to keep him here unless it's something that clearly improves the team. Who knows though? I think there is a good 75-80% chance this team makes a HUGE trade at the deadline so you have to make the numbers work somehow.

Option C: Use him as an energy player rather than a sixth man.

If offered a reliable shooter that Karl would use though, I would not hesitate.

Personally I would trade him, not because I have a problem with him after all he is a solid energy player, however he is Karl's crutch this year meaning he plays too much not allowing the shooter we desperately need on the court to get there.

I actually think Masai would be tempted by this trade, he would probably do it for Hamilton/Cash for Brewer.

Gives Denver a good shooter from the field and FT line, and someone that has played in big clutch situations.

For the Bulls it gives them a runner/defensive wing, and re-unites Brew and Noah. Right now Chicago could use some athleticism.
