I saw that too. I believe there are now 5 NBA teams without a D-league team for next year.

I've always thought the Raptors did it right with their D-league team in a suburb of Toronto. The Nuggets could put theirs at the Budweiser Center in Loveland. However, considering the Kroenkes' love for money, would it make more sense to start it in Las Vegas or Seattle? Both cities are likely candidates for expansion, but the Nuggets could make some money until the NBA moves there.

I will 3rd that the rumor was out there, but I did not hear of any team announcing a dleague team the last few weeks. I will say that the Nuggets did try to set up their D-league team in Broomfield and actually own that arena there, but it did not draw well at all. I think a minor league team would work well at the Budweiser center in Loveland, I could also see one working in Cheyenne, or Colorado Springs, but last rumor I heard was they were looking at Kansas City and Omaha primarily. Both already have arenas that will work for a Dleague team.

Yup, totally agree and if there was a team in Cheyenne, I'd be smiling big. But the Nuggets say, "We'd like to make a trade" and nothing happens. They've said for a several months, "We'd like a D-league team" but nothing happens. Meanwhile 5 other teams, if my count is right, have acquired or established a D-league team since this season started. <sigh> The Nuggets have become the little boy who cried wolf. They haven't convinced me of anything except they don't want to spend any money.

Is it too late for the Nuggets' to start a D-league team? Seems unlikely now.
As I've said, I didn't believe they would. With the new D-league rule, it would make even more sense, but it would cost money. The Nuggets seem to prefer spending less over making sense IMO.

An interesting article linked below. The NBA is considering removing the one-year college requirement and this article talks about how the G-League (the new name of the D-League). It includes the following paragraph:

"The G League will have 26 teams in the 2017-18 season, each of them affiliated with a single NBA club. Most of the G League teams are owned by their NBA affiliates. Of the four teams without a G League partner, two — the Wizards and Pelicans — have declared they plan to have teams in place in 2018. The Nuggets have been rumored in a number of markets, most recently Omaha. The Blazers are inexplicably absent in G League expansion talk — odd given the immense wealth of franchise owner Paul Allen. But momentum is clearly on the G League’s side."
