Kroenke to sell Nuggets and Avalanche to buy Rams

Post#1 » by darth_federer » Wed Jun 2, 2010 7:26 pm

The National Football League appears to be moving toward approving sports magnate Stan Kroenke as the next owner of the St. Louis Rams and allowing him a grace period to sell basketball's Denver Nuggets and hockey's Colorado Avalanche, sources say, despite the league’s prohibition against owners controlling teams in other NFL markets.

To whom Kroenke would sell the Denver teams is unclear, the sources said, and the NFL has not yet signed off on whether the clubs could transfer to his family members.

The league has rejected the idea of letting his wife buy the Rams, but NFL owners made it clear they do want Kroenke as the Rams' majority owner.

“Stan would be a great partner,” said New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft, a member of the league’s finance committee, as he departed the spring owners meeting. “I would like to see him in the room. We are trying to find a way for him to solve the problems.”

Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, who arguably is most affected by the issue, said, “I have no issues with Stan.”

The cross-ownership ban is in place because the league does not want its owners competing against one another in their markets. The rule pertains to National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and Major League Baseball clubs.

Sources said Kroenke would not be selling Pepsi Center, home to the NBA Nuggets and NHL Avalanche; his regional sports network, Altitude Sports & Entertainment, which broadcasts many Nuggets and Avalanche games; or the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer, which Kroenke also owns.

I posted this on the GB as well. I know the Avalanche were an awesome hockey team for a long time, but the Nuggets have been hot and cold. Is this guy a good owner?

personally i never liked him. he was always an uptight prick in my opinion.

hope we get a buyer that doesn't schedule another event on the same day as a playoff game.

Kroenke is one of the best owners in basketball, and is probably the best owner in Nuggets franchise history. Not many owners would continue to lose money and approve big long term deals even while the team has only made it out of the 1st round of the playoffs once in the last 15 years or so.

As for the sale, I believe that the plan is for Kroenke to transfer ownership to his wife or son, so I doubt much changes.

That is good news Rebel, Kroenke is a owner that just wants a winner. I'm glad it is potentially staying in his family.

im pretty sure his son or wife will just gain ownership status, but he will prob still make the decisions... just a formality so he could own both of them

I would have agreed with you until this past year. The FO use to talk about chess moves, trading Hunter + 1st to get under the luxury tax was a complete money saving move, not one you make when you want to win. The team could have used Hunter and the 1st to pick up some much needed front court help. Although I thought/hoped he might take that money he saved and use it to improve the team this year, filling the last hole on the team to push it past the Lakers, and instead they brought in Malik Allen.

Now, I'm not trying to hate on Stan. He has definitely been the Nuggets best owner, but for a guy who supposedly wants to win, his actions to hamstring the Nuggets when they are finally a title contender, just doesn't make sense.

I do agree with you but what really pisses me off is that when we traded away hunter and the first, we pretty much got rid of our only tradable assets.... like add Hunter to Balkman, AC, Graham and/or Malik with that first we could have gotten Tyrus Thomas b/c that was as good as Charlotte's offer.... I wouldn't have been mad if we used a first to dump a horrible contract but we could have waited as long as we wanted for that deal, b/c it would have always been there.
Pretty much i get the feeling that Stan panicked and told the FO to dump Steven b/c he didn't think we would be able to later in the year.
but there is a chance we buy back that first (or another one) this draft, so it wouldn't make me that mad

I will agree that they made a huge mistake trading Hunter and the pick, however the fact is that the front office obviously had the okay to make a deal, as Allen was on a 2 year deal, which means it was more then the minimum. Now I place the blame on the front office for taking him as opposed to Elson when they did the deal. Fact is that 2-3 years ago Allen was a pretty good 4th option that knew his place and was happy in it. But while with the Bucks he looked pretty bad, and was done before we got the guy. The Nuggets were also said to have the okay to offer Illgauskuas the full LLE when he was cut, but it was too late they needed to make a deal sooner.

So while I wish they had done something else with Hunter and the Pick, I do not blame Kroenke as I would not want to pay a guy like Hunter to sit on the bench a 3rd season while they looked for some kind of deal.

Not many owners are willing to spend like Stan does, but there are owners that are willing to spend more than he does.

Kroenke bought the Nuggets in 2000, since that time they had made the playoffs 7 times, and have spent more money then they ever would have considered under the previous regimes. Plus he seems to let the front office make the decisions, and has paid the tax despite losing money every year. So to say he is a bad owner is just plain ignorant, he may not spend as much as some would like, but he does his best to keep the team competitive while on a budget.
