The team get Melo via the trade would ask him extending contract first just in case that he will leave next summer. Therefore, both the Clippers and the Raptors are not likely to accept the trade, since Melo wouldn't extend his contract for these two non-playoff teams.

They may be deep but those player have contracts not worth taking on.

Kevin Martin, Shane Battier, Jared Jeffries (too make the money work), 2011 1st rd pick, 2012 Knicks 1st rd pick for Melo and JR Smith.

You get Martin a borderline all-star for three years, one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA and 2 picks that could both end up in the lottery depending on how the Knicks play (Not getting Carmelo helps!)
