So a little over a year ago the Nuggets sent #15 packing for a package consisting of
Gallo, Chandler, Felton(Miller), Mozgov and Koufus
for
Anthony, Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman.
Curious to see what ya'll think of the deal now that a year has passed? Did we get a good deal? Would the Nets deal (Favors and picks I believe) have been better?
Personally short-term the Knicks deal was better, IDK what all will come of all those picks. Favors hasn't made much progress in year 2. That being said Koufus is the only acquisition to show progress so far IMO. Gallo and Chandler didn't progress this year due to injuries, Moz got worse but he actually stayed the same, all his hype just disappeared. Overall I liked having Miller here for the year but I doubt he stays so we'll have to see who his 7 million in cap space goes to.

Re: Melo Trade, A year later....
I failed to address what we gave up...
It was sad to see Billups go but he wasn't gonna be worth 14 mil this season, we woulda been waaay over the cap if he stuck around.
From what i've seen Melo is still Melo, He can take a game over, put up 40 and hit the game-winner, but he can also be a ball stopper that fails to aid in the development of young talent (Mainly JR but I guess that Lin dude too....)
We have won more games without Melo than the Knicks have won with him...Plus we didn't have to cringe seeing GK play Anthony Carter. That alone made the deal a good one.

Re: Melo Trade, A year later....
as of now its hard not to like the trade. we are winning more, we are younger, have a better attitude/image, have more cap flexibility and more assets.
we will see how it looks like 2-3 years. i hope masai and josh can work some magic and turn us from a good team into a great team. the opportunity is there. we have pieces to work with.

I think we did pretty well, considering the situation. I'd still rather have Melo, but looking at what happened to other franchises, I can't complain too much.

I'd definitely prefer the Nets package but we haven't been this flexible in terms of assets and cap space in a long time.
I also think it was time to end the Melo era as well. 8 years of only 1 first round exit... we built a team that maximized him as a player and surrounded him with the right players but couldn't win a ring. It's too hard to build around him so a rebuild was the right choice.

I agree it was time to end the Melo era, but I still like the Nets package much better then the Knicks package.
Most of the things I did not like about the Knicks package has come true. Gallo is injury prone, Felton had a bad attitude and did not like coming off the bench, Chandler is about an average player outside of D'Antoni's system, Mozgov has shown a couple of flashes but has still not shown he belongs in the NBA. Overall I think doing the Knicks deal has made the Nuggets a treadmill team, and while I like the picks they have used last year, it is just reality that you have to get really lucky to get even an all star type late in the 1st round.
The Nets package would have netted both Favors and Kanter, as well as Harris being moved for a 4th pick. Which would have given the same type of financial flexibility but would have given us 2 bigs with high ceilings and 3 more picks over the next couple of years as well as made the Nuggets picks better for the next couple years as well. the odds are that the Nuggets would have busted on half the draft picks, but overall they could have easily built a more talented team over the next 3 years with a higher ceiling.

Re: Melo Trade, A year later....
Gallo has been injured that is true but his injuries have been relatively minor and will not affect his future. Of all the players that we were traded both from the Nets and Knicks, to me, Gallo is the key. I think he has the most upside of all and he is already a key starter on a playoff bound team. Mosgov, Chandler and some other players may give us the type of package for a future trade. I think the Nuggets are building a quality team with an eye to the future.
Canned in Denver.

I still liked the Nets deal more. But, Denver did pretty well for themselves. Looks like Gallinari, Koufos, Hamilton, 2014 1st and 2016 swap are the main pieces in the deal.

Nuggets did pretty well in the deal. They didn't collapse like a lot of people predicted. In fact, they're still fielding quite a competitive team.
