Nuggets' 3pt Shooting

Post#1 » by NuggetsWY » Tue Mar 7, 2017 1:19 pm

In the old days, it was often said that a 3pt shooter was only good if they shot over 33% on 3s. That was based on the mathematics of scoring FTs vs. 2pt vs. 3pt. These days, 3pt shooting is looked at very differently. That's partly because 3pt shooting "loosens" the defense and partly because shooters are so much better today. Although the best in the old days were as good as most of the good 3pt shooters these days, Overall, 3pt shooting is much better.

Add to that, another saying that "Jump shooters can shoot you out of a game as fast as they can shoot you into the game" meaning they run hot and cold.

What were your expectations of the Nuggets' roster coming into this season and what do you consider acceptable as a team and as individuals?

As a team the Nuggets are shooting 37%.
Here's the list of players that have made 3pt shots:

.464 Arthur
.422 Harris
.420 Hernangomez
.391 Nelson
.385 Gallinari
.370 Jokic
.363 Barton
.353 Beasley
.341 Chandler
.328 Murray
.309 Mudiay

I voted "As expected". I wanted to believe they would shoot better than they have, but I didn't really believe, based on previous seasons. I don't know what the advanced metrics say about "Since this date or that date" but I suspect they have shot better since the first of the year.

Murray's numbers are the ones that surprise me the most, but he starter terribly plus he gets yanked out of a game if he misses a few, so he might be a little timid (although lately it's been much better).

Nelson is having his best 3pt shooting season in quite a few years.
Barton is shooting a career best at 3pters.
Arthur is also have a career best season on 3pters.
Gallinari is around his career average. His numbers seem to go up & down from one season to the next.
Chandler is also somewhere around his career average.
