Did Malone change the offense again???

Post#1 » by youngthegiant » Wed Oct 10, 2018 4:26 am

I know it's preseason but I'm getting flashbacks to how last season started. The starters have not been good. Murray has looked very tentative and has not been pushing the pace or getting the offense moving quickly. This tells me Malone has once again began to call more plays and taken away the freeflow style of basketball Denver is best at.

Preseason is more about bench players, but I must confess that I'm not happy at all for what I see so far from Millsap and Barton, and scared to see Jokic 2 assists per game. Murray and Harris has problems with injuries, so they have excuses.

Saying this, the fact is that most important thing about preseason, bench, looking good to me in general, despite we played without IT, our destined 6th man this season.

During the broadcast last night they were discussing the idea that Malone wanted more iso plays for Millsap and Barton, which tells me that yes Malone has seemingly forgotten what makes this team special over the summer once again.

Nope, Malone hasn't changed the offense again. He still wants to call the plays and run ISO plays. I don't understand why. Murray & Barton & Thomas & probably Beasley are probably the only players that are at least average in ISO plays.

Does kinda make you wonder if Malone really wants this job.....perhaps he is too ingrained in what his father had success at he can't see beyond that to realize what will make this team successful.

Was his father really that successful?

Maybe you'all are seeing something that I am not but after the opening game of the season, the offense looks the same. Shooting is off but the shots are there. Same weave inside the zone with Jokic near the top of the key. There seems to be two variations with Jokic starting the flow looking for a cutter first then sometimes peeling off to the basket or looking for an open three. Sometimes they reverse the flow with Jokic setting a pick. Millsap is working around the baseline looking for rebounds. Then you have Gary Harris sometimes moving to the ball then reversing to the basket for a back door layup or setting up for three. There are some variation with different screeners, different shooters.

Pick and Roll or Pick and Pop (whatever) this offense is geared for shooters through the use of screens. The penetrating wing off the screen has to be picked up and Jokic is the master at deciding who has the best chance for an open shot.

Yes, it sure looks like the same offense to me. Now the defense looks different, more aggressive.
Canned in Denver.

Millsap is an awful post up player at this point of his career , turnover waiting to happen, and they still keep feeding him with the balls in the paint

Agreed but I'd also say that Jokic needs the ball more. His usage was less than 25% in the first game. With his skills, it probably needs to be at least close to 30%. I'd also like to see more movement. If that means using more depth, then so be it. Wear those teams out and hold close through 3 quarters and destroy them in the 4th (pardon me for reverting to the old, old Nuggets LOL).
