Rookie Scale Extensions

Since I do not always understand all of the convolutions of the NBA CBA, some of this may be wrong. Feel free to correct me!

I believe we can only sign one of our three eligible players to a Rookie Scale Extension, since we signed Harris to one last year. The year before, I do not believe we signed Jokic to a Rookie Scale Extension. Is that correct? I believe we are only allowed two of these extensions.

Clearly Murray needs to be taken care of. So we will have to let Hernangomez & Beasley become FAs after next season?

You can sign everybody coming off of a rookie 1st round pick to a extension, what you are probably thinking is that you can only sign or have 1 player under the Rose rule extension, which allows a team to give a player a super max deal if they meet the criteria. We do not have anybody currently signed under the rose rule.

I am not sure that it makes sense to extend Murray or any of the other guys expiring next summer at this point. They are all going to be restricted including Craig, and depending on how we do in free agency and with trades this summer having a slot for a max deal could be possible while keeping all the young guys.

They should work on deals for all 3 hoping to get Beasley and/or juancho signed to good value deal

What did that extension for Jokic before he started making All Nba teams do for the Nugs?

With Malik Beasley I’m worried about what I really think is going to happen in free agency. All the big guys sign with their teams and now all that cap space Out there brings out those big contracts from guys like Crabbe or hardaway jr

Beasley 12-14 per?

Juancho ?? 8-10

That’s where I’d like signing these guys for 4 years. Can those deals be 5 year deals?

The concern is you have to be really sure they’ll be starters/key rotation players 3 years from now or they’re horrible deals

Beasley, Juancho, and Murray are not free agents this year, nobody else can sign them for at least a year and even then they are restricted free agents.

The Nuggets opted out of Jokic's deal to keep him restricted and signed him to a max deal, so really it did not change anything. Jokic would not have qualified for the rose rule extension and has not been in the league long enough to be a supermax eligible player this summer, but he would have been unrestricted.

Signing rookie extensions with Beasley, Murray, and Juancho this year does 2 things. IT limits the length of their contract to 4 years, meaning they are only guaranteed to be locked in for 5 years. Not a big deal with Juancho and possibly Beasley, but it cost us a year on Murray. It also guarantees this team does not have cap room again until 2022 at the soonest, which will also be Jokic's final year under contract.

IF you are handing out those extensions than you better be damn sure that this team has either the players or assets to trade for the players to contend for the next 3 years, or you could end up with nothing in 3 years.

Yeah it’s 3 years from now that I’m thinking of. That’s why I like the idea of moving Harris and Barton now and trying for a great value extension w Beasley . I’d hate to gamble on a Barton extension or juancho with too many guys in the way for max production.

Craig is an interesting guy too. Depending on what the Nugs do with him he might be a fringe player hoping to find a spot next season or if the Nugs use him as a starter he could easily play his way into a 10+ per year guy.

2 seasons from now
Harris: 22
Barton: 15
Beasley: 18
Craig: 11
Juancho: 10

What if MPJ can play? Nugs certainly can’t pay all those guys right? If you don’t choose which ones you let go you get the choice taken away from you. I could see after next season needing to attarch mpj or Vanderbilt to get rid of Barton and having the better of Beasley/juancho/Craig walk because you can’t pay that much.

I also really like getting another big. Plumlee is too important to this roster right now. I like Saric a lot and would love to have Saric and plumlee. You might get a better value contract moving forward on one of them if you have them both.

And after next season it’s teally only mpj, Vanderbilt and Monte Morris on small deals still. Even though you guys are happy without draft picks this roster will still need some small salaries that picks would bring
