2019 Summer League

Post#1 » by THE J0KER » Mon Jun 17, 2019 6:58 am

The 2019 NBA Summer League will be held at the Thomas and Mack Center and Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nevada on the campus of University of Nevada, Las Vegas. It will begin on July 5 and end on July 15. All 30 teams and two national teams, China and Croatia, will participate. Teams competed in a tournament-style schedule in four preliminary games before seeding in a tournament; each team played at least five games and as many as seven games. The event will conclude with the 2019 NBA Summer League Championship game on July 15.

recommended article: Pain Free And Ready For Summer League: Is Michael Porter Jr. The Denver Nuggets' Missing Piece?

3 days before draft there are no rumors that Denver aggressive FO trying to get some pick, so this draft is already dead for us with no picks. I secretly hoped that we will trade Barton for some early 2nd rounder, but... whatever...

But no reasons to be sad, despite no draft picks this June, we still have reasons to be very excited in this part of the year, even if our aggressive FO decide to ignore FA market 2nd straight year. Denver already have a strong candidate for 2020 all-rookie first team in rookie Michael Porter Jr, and we can see his debut during this July Summer League! Also, it is maybe time for us to try to find another Torrey Craig, a very useful (even for NBA playoff metrics) player which left undrafted being under the radar, but showing NBA potential during SL.

Summer league expectations and hopes (in order of my priority):

1. Porter to play strong with confidence (don't expect Malone to give him a shot at rookie of the year though).

2-3. Cancar to get a solid shot and show us he belongs in the NBA.
2-3. Vanderbilt to be a solid rebounder & defender.

4. Welsh demonstrate he can play center.
5. Goodwin to play well.

1. It would be risky too to give him 25+ mpg anyway after 2 years pause and dangerous injury. But, as I said, I really believe in his odds to reach all-rookie first team next season (aka TOP5 in class).
2-3-4 Too early for JV and Welsh for notable season in the league TOP5 (or close) team, and for Cancar my expectations are not optimistic. Similar Euro players Bojan and Bogdan Bogdanovic also still playing in Europe at 22, but they played on a much higher level at the time than Vlatko.
5. Maybe Goodwin is next Craig? Summer League is a better test than G-League.

Can honestly say I think there aren't a lot of people who have ever expected JV or Welsh to be TOP 5 players in their class, probably why they were both selected in the 2nd round. JV has potential to be a very good player IMO so the SL will be important to see what both players show.

Cancar wasn't playing in the top Euro league but was voted a top 5 player in his respective league. He also did show a lot of good in last years SL, many thought he would've made this last years team had they had a roster spot for him. Comparing him to former 1st rounders also seems a bit unfair, especially where the Nuggets are looking to play him (off the bench)

And Summer League a better test than the G-League ??? I get that we don't have our own development team with our own coaching staff, but the Summer league lasts about THREE WEEKS, not the 50 games played in the G-League....that's a HUGE over-evaluation, c'mon man !! And you seemingly singled out Goodwin as a high potential guy, likening him to a guy who made the team ??? Seems a stretch given our current guards vs the need at forward...Even if Goodwin makes the team, he'll rarely see the floor with Murray, Harris, Beasley, MM and eve Barton ahead of him

I believe in JV future very much. But successful forwards with large shooting problems need some extra time to develop. Draymond Green and Boris Diaw didn't become relevant until 23-24, and Jarred Vanderbilt is just 20 old now. I simply can't see some defensive specialist with passing talent being a big factor in a very good team as Denver before becoming a grown man.

Vlatko Cancar was selected in the all-YOUTH first team of ACB league, which means TOP5 under-21 players of the Spanish league, not TOP5 overall. He is barely TOP50 player in that league this season, not TOP30 for sure. For NBA level he needed a breakthrough year, which clearly not happens, not just improvement. I'm especially disappointed in his 3pt% this season which was 33% (note that Euro/FIBA threes are like in NCAA or WNBA 22 feet long).

If G-League is better testing than Summer League, we don't need to test Goodwin at all anymore, 22-7-6 numbers seem great already. But of course, a couple of games in the Summer League can be more relevant. For example, last summer for Denver SL team played Beasley and Morris, both better than best G-League player. And every of 30 SL teams always has at least one, or two, or even 3+ such players, enough good to be G-League TOP3 if they going to play there instead of NBA. Watching how player playing in such competition for me is more relevant.

The reason I'm fairly high on Vanderbilt is his length & defense & athleticism. Starter? Not sure but will Jokic, Porter, Harris, Murray he just might fit.

The reason I'm fairly high on Cancar is because he looks like a perfect fit between Jokic & Porter. He'd probably be the 5th option on offense but his game would seem to work in that role.

That's not a bad group of newbies considering no draft pick this year.

He is listed as healthy for this draft, but still dropped so badly on the draft and fact is that he played less than 10 games in NCAA last season. Youngsters sometimes can be overconfident and want too much to prove themselves. Despite I'm excited too to see him already next month, I will not complain if our team due precautions reasons decide to shut down Bol Bol at some indefinite period of time, even if he is officially listed healthy. If I can wait for Porter Jr so long, I will survive a couple extra weeks or even months with Bol too.

That Tyler Harris samurai from Japan is actually Tobias Harris younger brother, which can be very interesting information.

I guess too, but I listed only these which lately are confirmed in different news and reports.

Some other names are confirmed yesterday, and I think this is a complete list, so, as expected, no Bol Bol.

Porter & Vanderbilt are going to be on the Nuggets roster.
Welsh seems likely also.
If Cancar is ever going to play for the Nuggets, it will have to be this year.
Goodwin is the other player with a serious shot at making the Nuggets.

I hope each of those five get enough PT to let us see their potential (especially Cancar IMO).

The rest of the team would have to really be impressive to get a shot at the Nuggets' roster slots.

I hope that Cancar Can fill our needs as a six man sharp shooter small forward off the bench I would really like to see him make the team
