Paul Millsap Re-Sign!

Huge Day for the Nugs to do the right thing and pick up Millsap option. I was so worried they’d do the typical kronekenugs thing and lose that salary slot to save money.

Now there’s 2 options, but I think Connelly is a stud and knows what he’s doing. There’s only one way to maximize that salary slot. And because of how good the Nugs are going to be this season they can’t do it at mid-season......

Millsap seems likely to be the Nuggets' starting PF - at least at the beginning of the year. He seems like a perfect fit next to Jokic. At this point in his career, he doesn't appear to have much he needs to work on - except being healthy. His defense is very good and he's not a demanding person when it comes to the offense. He has willingly reduced his offense since arriving in Denver. He has a great attitude.

It will be interesting to see how many minutes he is getting each month. His first year here, he only played 38 games. Last year he only played 70 games. Perhaps he needs load management - perhaps Grant will begin to earn more PF minutes.

This is a contract year, so will he "step it up" in terms of games played? Will the Nuggets keep him after this year? As a backup, at a reduced salary?

Salary of Paul Millsap and other 40 best-paid players this season.

Lack of creativity and ambitions our front office showed last summer in this particular case will cost as joining Bucks, Lakers, and Clippers as this season's main favorites status. If we redirected these 30M in a smarter way (actually less dumb way) and give that "third-star" guy to Jokic and Murray, only the sky would be limit. This summer when he expires once again is too late because this money is already rightfully redirected to Jamal Murray's pocket, so FO missed a historic opportunity to create true superteam.

And let's be clear if we look at Millsap as a 35 old player, there is nothing unusual in his declining numbers even for former multiple all-star player standards. LeBron is a phenom, and Aldridge and Chris Paul somehow still being relevant in these ages, but all others from these 35+ generations declined in a similar or worse way than Millsap, or actually in most cases already retired.

The inability of our FO to find and sign TOP50 level player via trade or on FA market cost us historic opportunity to be championship ring frontrunners for the first time ever, but looking at MPJ potential we will still get our BIG-3 lineup in very near future.

He was supposed to be traded. Letting his contract slot expire shows lack of effort to win it all. Owners went cheap or front office deserves an F or both this season.

Millsap's points and rebounds seem slightly down from the regular season.
I suspect his defensive stats are also down, but then again, in the playoffs he's facing some fairly serious players.

If we get him on an a very huge pay cut, I wouldn't mind him coming back but I'd prefer to have him come off the bench.

I hope Millsap retires or goes back to play for Atlanta. He will likely get a MLE type of deal from somewhere, but I do not think he is worth the money, and with as bad as he has regressed the last 2 years he is no longer the guy we need at PF defensively either.

Millsap is nearing the end. Denver will have a 30 million dollar expiring contract at the end of the season.

Murray will take up a chunk of that expiring but there will be some room to sign Grant. Given that the team has reached the WCF, I would expect the front office to consider going into the luxury cap next season.

In general, it is great to have former multiple all-star veterans like Paul Millsap when they are far away from their peak but still have big knowledge and experience. Lakers for example have not one but two such players (Howard and Rondo). BUT LAKERS PAYING THEM THIS SEASON 5 MILLION BOTH TOGETHER (2.5M+2.5M) WHILE WE SPEND 30 MILLION ON MILLSAP ALONE! And that is not the final year of the expiring contract like many thinking but in reality, one-year deal when FO re-signed him last summer using team option.

Millsap has been a good vet, can't say I was a fan of picking up his offer but it does look like a better option than resigning his at a lower rate for 2-3 year contract. His play has rapidly declined and I'm not in for resigning him for anything more than the vet minimum and not as a starter. As for his veteran experience in the playoffs, this team has been gaining valuable experience over the past two years and now we're in the WCF, as far as PM has ever been so not much more that he can teach us.

Last summer I loudly complained about Nuggets choosing the gigantic $30M team option for 35y old veteran Paul Millsap.

But this offseason, despite he is a year older, no complaints about a new deal with former all-star because $10M is a proper price, and our FO obviously still have big problems to sign with any notable name via trade or in the FA market, and after losing Grant, we desperately need some decent PF.

Welcome back, Paul Millsap!

While Millsap is declining, he did do a heck of a job against Davis in the playoffs, having him another year while the young bigs develop is not a bad thing.

We need him to hang about, especially with Grant leaving

I see Millsap as a 5 now as he still has the defensive instincts and rebounding ability but is too slow now especially with the hedging system we have.

We overpay him again but in a crazy market like this is not a bad deal, especially since is a one year contract.
He can help in some match-up in the playoff, if Malone use him well.

I know it would've been stupid of Millsap to turn down the $10M offer (more stupid to offer it, but at the time, we were scrambling) but PM is still a decent defender, all-around good guy IMO. However, wonder how he looks at his own play right now, the writing is definitely on the wall. If I were in his shoes, I'd be taking Nnaji under my wing and prepping this guy for the inevitable.

He's always been a class-act and he's always been a leader for the young players. Remember his first year he gathered everyone at his home for private workouts? (I think it was at his own expense even, but I might have that wrong.) I totally believe signing him to that contract was a good deal - especially as a teacher. Now, if his play isn't up to expectations; whether he plays or not is up to the coach.

We signed 7M worthy PF for 10M and 10M worthy PF for 7M, so no overall loses. Millsap declined defense will not look so bad against opponents' 2nd units like it seems now vs starting lineups, and against all odds, he becomes a decent 3pt shooter as a veteran, so he can be a decent backup option, as well as Green would be a decent PF starter. Malone needs to switch minutes and roles of these two and there will be fewer complaints.

I'm also pleased with what I see from Nnaji so far, but I'm still thinking it is Bol Bol who needs to get his chance first. Bol is obviously very disappointed with his zero roles in the new season where he has great expectations while last season he energized the team's game in rare minutes he played. If he gets guaranteed 8-10 mpg every game I'm sure Bol will look much better.

I think Malone has to be in a very tough spot. It is easy to see that Millsap is not the player he was even a year ago, and really not the player we signed 3 1/2 years ago, but he was the veteran leader that Malone could always trust. When things were going haywire or guys were panicking Millsap would come into the game and take over for a few minutes (if he could wrestle the ball from Barton) and things would calm down. He has been the guy in Harris, Murray, and Jokic's ear on the court and in the lockerroom teaching these guys how to keep their head straight and the tricks they needed. Millsap was great for that 3 year deal, and I am sure that Malone will give him every opportunity to get better this season and I understand it, but I think he has gotten to the point that he cannot start anymore.

Little more on this: Millsap did have an MRI in Boston but the team still doesn't have anything definitive on his knee. Given Millsap's age, and the fact that he missed most of January last season with a knee issue, expect the Nuggets to use some caution.
