Detroit went all in to get the Nuggets’ fourth-best player, waiving the recently acquired Dewayne Dedmon and Rodney McGruder and incurring an additional $3.7 million cap charge each of the next five seasons. My BORD$ [estimated real value based on performance] formula says Grant will be worth about $7.6 million next season; the Nuggets were significantly better when he was of the floor in both the regular season and the postseason. His contract is, by leaps and bounds, the worst free agent value thus far.

In fact, now the full plan has come together, one can see that the entire reason the Pistons traded FOUR second-round picks to turn Luke Kennard into Saddiq Bey and Rodney McGruder was because the non-guaranteed second year on McGruder’s deal was much more favorable to using the stretch provision. Similarly, trading Tony Snell and Khyri Thomas for Dedmon – who also had a lightly guaranteed second season – permitted the same maneuver.

The Pistons wouldn’t have needed to do any of these gymnastics had they not inexplicably also dropped a three-year, $25 million deal on Mason Plumlee (BORD$ value: $3.3 million), a pretty generic backup 5 who is not likely to be demonstrably better than recently acquired Tony Bradley or first-round draft pick Isaiah Stewart.
- John Hollinger

It's interesting to see someone like Hollinger think of him that low.

Grant was worth about $12~14 per year by the eyetest, Hollinger's unemployed for a reason. Not overpaying was the right move (A move we didn't make, by the way - talk about getting desperate), but he was a critical part of our rotation, and his offense was good enough for us to make the deep run we did, even if the %s tanked.

It hurts to hear that he turned down the match because he wants a bigger offensive role; he's standing next to Blake Griffin and D Rose now. It sounds too absurd to be the reason, maybe he's saying something else in a professional manner?

Phoenix, Dallas, Portland, Utah all got significantly better through their acquisitions, maybe the Pelicans too. Memphis is still a player. The West is playing musical chairs again and it feels as though we are already falling behind.

 Yeah we gotta start acting soon in looking for a big wing defender.

Something like Monte Morris + Will Barton for Aaron Gordon.

Many seem happy about Green but it doesn't look like he's good at much except for 3pt shooting and rebounding.

Millsap becomes a priority signing too.

Very disappointing; sure, he didn't get the playing time last year, but that had to be expected with Millsap as the starter. He said he wanted to be a starter on a contender and he had that opportunity this year. Oh well, good luck to him. The Nuggets will do fine.

Pistons will not be contenders and in fact, I'll be surprised if they make the playoffs. Even crazier, Grant's going to be playing small forward for the most part and I don't see him as having the offensive skills for that slot. It could work because Griffin is a true power forward that likes to play like a small forward (fairly effectively). But I'm skeptical.

They're just as mystified over in the DET forum, seem new GM Troy Weaver wants to make a name for himself....or get fired very soon IMO. Seems Weaver has OKC ties and evidently loves what the Nuggets had.

As for Grant, he must've read all the pressers on himself and thought he was better than he really is. Hope he enjoys losing 'cuz that what he's gonna be doing.

Hollinger is a numbers guy, if you look at the numbers Grant actually was one of the worst players in our rotation last year. I remember many game threads were people were pissed that he was our PF of the future, he did not show out well most of the season.

Grant got overpaid based on a couple of games against the Lakers and the Clippers in the playoffs, where he looked like we hoped he would be when we traded for him. I don't think he is a 3rd or 2nd guy, and I think his defense was overrated, but he fit what we needed so I was okay keeping him. I just hope we have a better plan than Green to replace him, as he is replaceable.

The Pistons just paid $85 million for our bench bigs, of course the fans are pissed. I get that teams love what we had, but I don't think overpaying our bench guys is going to give them that.

Detroit also stretched 2 guys they just acquired in order to sign Plumlee and Grant, so they spent another $15M to bring those two in as starters. Pretty much anti-Presti moves.

I guess in the long-run, at least Grant didn't go to MIA or another contender, that would've really broken the camel's back IMO.

Just speculating here but could it be that Grant looked into the crystal ball and saw that with MPJ on the horizon in Denver, his ability to pad his statistics would be curtailed?

He certainly lied about trying to be on a playoff contender. Detroit's Blake Griffin looks to be on a steady decline there, opening up more shots available to Grant.

If that is true, then his only interest is his future statistics and we really don't need this type of player.
Canned in Denver.

I agree, it looks like he wants more stats, and I guess given how his uncle is forgotten so often as being the 3rd key guy on those Bulls teams I guess I can understand why. I just do not think he is capable of being much more than a 3 and D guy, all tracking and advanced stats show that outside of defense and shooting he is way below average. I wish him luck, we need role players who understand they are role players and focus on doing that to the best of their ability.

Nuggets getting cash and a $9.5M TPE in a S&T with Detroit for Grant. Better than losing him for nothing but I would have like Sekou or Bey coming back to us.

How come it's 9.5M and not the 20M Grant is getting?

I'm just the messenger, ask Rebel, he's the brains !! Perhaps that's his cap hold with us, he then signs the contract with DET.

Yeah looks like it's 9.5M. Shame. Basically nothing in today's league.

We can trade Barton and 1 of the $1.5-2 million a year contracts for Gordon if we want him, but I doubt we do.

Not sure if I'm correct, but couldn't we say, trade Millsap and his $10M cap hit for a $19.5M salary using that TPE ?? Not bad....
