Nuggets acquire Weems from Bulls
DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets jumped back into the NBA draft, acquiring Sonny Weems from the Chicago Bulls for a second-round selection in 2009.
The Arkansas guard/forward was selected by the Bulls with the 39th overall pick before being shipped to the Nuggets Thursday night.
Denver traded out of the draft Wednesday, sending its spot at No. 20 to the Charlotte Bobcats for a future, protected first-round selection. The Bobcats parlayed that pick into center Alexis Ajinca of France.
The Nuggets didn’t have a selection in 2007 and traded away their second-round pick, Leon Powe, to Boston in 2006.
The 6-foot-6, 203-pound Weems averaged 15 points and 4.5 rebounds a game last season for the Razorbacks.
ok... it wasn't Speights, Chalmers, or Greene.
it was some guy with "Weems" in his name...
i dont know how we got him though... someone fill me in.

So... we traded the 20 because guys like Jordan, Kosta, Mario, and Arthur would have trouble making the team, but this guy (whoever he is) will have not problem? Sounds like they just made a move to make a move...

Re: Sonny Weems, the newest Nugget
The Bulls traded the 39th pick in NBA Draft 2008 (which turned out to be 6-6 guard/forward Sonny Weems from Arkansas) to the Denver Nuggets for Denver’s 2009 regular second-round draft pick. Chicago then acquired the 36th selection in NBA Draft 2008 from the Portland Trail Blazers for Denver’s 2009 regular second-round pick, the New York Knicks’ 2009 regular second-round pick (acquired from New York on Oct. 4, 2005 in the Eddy Curry trade), and Chicago’s 2010 regular second-round draft pick.
Heres my observation on the drafting of sonny weems.
He is an athletic freak, was in the dunk contest (and won), while jumping from the free throw line and throwing it down plus did a between the legs slam after a little assist to himself. IMO is better than speights greene and ijinca. Potential is unlimited and will be looked at as a steal by the nuggets. If you dont watch college basketball like i do and only watch the top teams, this is why you say who is sonny weems. Has a great outside shot, something the nuggets need and should start in a few years plus hes 6'6 (officially 6'4 in orlando) guard whos tall, again, something denver needs. 1st team all-SEC, 1st team all district by coaches and us writers association. Averaged 15 pts, 5 rpg, and 3 apg during his senior year. Each year got better as he was at a juco for his first two years then transfered and became all sec. Big game player. Basically its like we used our 20 on him and got a future 1st rounder to make two in one year. Great pickup for a future second rounder and on the bright side is cheaper than spending a pick on the afformentioned who imo are not as good as weems. Projected as a sg who is very comparable to maurice evans or devin harris. Change his stats per 40 minutes to match beasley, rose, mayo, love, bayless, gordon, etc. is as follows
pts, rebounds, assists
Beasley 30, 14, 1
Rose 20, 6, 6
Mayo 22, 5, 4
Bayless 22, 3, 5
Gordon 24, 4, 3
Weems 19, 6, 4
and i see a great player who was on an average team who didnt get pub for that reason and the fact that arkansas is not an attractive school to media etc. In all, i see him as a great pick up steal.
You may not see it now, but believe me, you will, and theres not reason to b**** and moan now just wait and see, all it could do is help, really there is nothing to lose. (except another first round playoff series but thats not what i meant).

beasley 103
mayo 99
bayless 99
etc
More observations...developing skills ... athlete who thrives in the open floor, up tempo game ... high riser with highlight dunks ... nice touch on his shot ... Slashes to the basket well...long armed and has good body control ... very good at running back door and converting ally oops ... solid free throw shooter (80%) ... three point shooter ...great deal of potential while skills are steadily catching up to his athleticism ... quick hands and feet make him a quality on ball defender ... strong defender who gathers a good deal of steals with his long arms and anticipation ...explosive...court sense and overall feel for the game have room for improvement ... lacks great passing ability ...turns the ball over too often ...sometimes settles too much for the outside shot instead of driving to the basket and using his athleticism to finish at the rim... should go to the line more often than he does, looking to draw contact but can follow same regiment as melo with the 10 10 10 and become better...better spot up shooter than off the dribble, but showed some improvement ... 5-10 pounds of muscle on frame could help him, even though hes quite muscular already. That all I got!

I'd also be interested to know who the hell is this Omar Asik, who seems to be worth 3 2nd rounders?

Asik is "aaaaa????****" hes a tall center who needs to bulk up bigtime and is a terrible free throw shooter and will probably stay in europe for a couple years because he would be dominated in america!

DrewDawg do u think Weems will contribute much this year or in the future?
i can't see him doing more than Yak tbh.
but getting Weems might be the end of Yak/AC/Eddie?

Exactly and a team like the C's, who btw won the championship, picking at 30, never bitched about picking a 30th overall player and never worried about that player not able to crack their rotation...

Re: Sonny Weems, the newest Nugget
those highlights were phenomenal. if this guy is so good why wasnt he drafted earlier. He looks like a great athlete. The two plays that i enjoyed the most were the 2 blocks. Is this guy fo real?

Hey man, at least JR will have someone to dunk with every now and then.
Nothing against Mr. Weems and his dunking abilities, but unless he's a closet point guard we're still down a floor leader, some range, and we are overloaded with swingmen. We have swingmen leading swingmen.

Re: Sonny Weems, the newest Nugget
if he is for real then maybe for once denver was the team to get the lucky 13 one!!!!!!
Someone says something really true here, arkansas was not a team who could compet other ncaa team, so the guy was left behind for the media.
But look at louis williams at philly, he plays but for a best player high school in the country, nothing impressive so far.
will see with weems...youtube definitely made me a good hope in him " at the moment", but so many players where highly rated like telfair and look at now, if telfair would go in europe, probably nobody will notice!!!!

This is a good description of his game.Sonny Weems is a player that can be compared with JR just because of his Dunking skills and athletic abilitys, not because of his talent that includes ball handling and shooting which are poor comparing with JR Smith, one of the bigest talents in NBA.

DrewDawg0808: You make him sound like a great pick up, but the question is, would he have a chance to develop in Denver? If he makes the roster, he would just be glued to the bench and see no playing time. Unless he gets shipped to the D-League for the year to work on his game.
Then next season, he'll hopefully be able to play backup for JR, since AI will be gone? That'd be nice if it works out that way.

This is how I see it: He will play in the summer league and will have a big impact and make the team and despite karl, he will oust either ac or yak. This will leave no excuse and he will get good role play time and will be groomed under jr and ai. If ai leaves then jr could be used at point with weems possibly at sg if not then as a backup to jr when we actually use next years top pick (s) on a pg. It could, it might not, but im very high on this dude!

JR at point? Jesus, I am seriously losing faith in my Nuggets brothers...
This season there is no chance of him getting any kind of role on the team. AI will play 40 a game, LK and JR will both play 20-30, and I'm sure Atkins will be the next obsession of Karl. This Weems guys will be lucky to get Yak's old role.

Having a bit of time to reflect on it, this isn't too terrible. We've been asking the front office to get us a shooter, and it looks like they've fallen in love with another athletic specimen. Worst case scenario, he never seems the floor. Best case scenario, we've got another JR on our hands. All in all, for the value we gave up, this seems like a very savvy and well thought out move. If we truly had our guy picked out and knew we could get him later, this is perfect draft strategy. For once, thumbs up to the front office.

Worst case scenerio this is a cheaper replacement for Diawara to sit on the end of the bench. Big difference is he has some skill on offense and the talent and athleticism to be a good defender.
