Pass first point guards.

Post#1 » by Ewingfan » Sun Nov 2, 2008 12:29 pm

Everybody loves talking about these pass first point guards. When was the last time a pass first point guard won an NBA championship. Some of you may be surprised but you have to go all the way back to Magic Johnson. So all these people that love Nash,Stockton,Chris Paul and all the other pass first point guards the jury is still out. Granted these guys have been very successful. Stockton is a Hall of Famer and Nash will be but great point guard play doesn't necessarily guarentee a championship.
Isaiah was a combo guard,Billups is a combo guard. Tony Parker is a scoring point guard. My point is teams with great players who are 6'6 and taller and also great big men have dominated the NBA in the past 18 years
Thats why Im easy easy like Sunday morning.

All I know is, you need someone more qualified at the PG spot than AC. With the exception of Rondo all the other championship PGs either has a leadership role or plays a great part in running the offense.

p.s. You forgot Billups.

Pass first pg's or not. There are plenty of guards in this league that know when to pass and when to take over. We don't seem to have a guard that is capable of doing either. I would like to think that AI could be this guy, but so far he hasn't shown it and the jury is still out on what big improvement Melo has made to his game during the break.

Definitely not needed.

But you have to keep in mind, most of the combo guards winning championships have a dominant big man on the inside. Which simplifies the point guard role...Combo guards flourish when all they have to do is feed the post, drive and kick or make a dump pass, or create their own shot.

Where they break down is when they have manage the flow of the game. Creating shots for other players, identifying mis-matches, managing the pace, etc...all the jobs that pure point guards are responsible for as floor generals.

As such, combo guards usually need a more vocal coach actively managing the game from play to play.

As this relates to denver, Karl is not a vocal coach nor has he shown an interest in managing the game from play to play. Thus he's reluctant to turn the backcourt over to AI and JR like some of us would like. Instead he's adamant on using a "pass first point guard" in AC, who supposedly is a good defender.

The problem in this case is that AC is NOT a good floor general as his judgment leaves a lot to be desired on the offensive end. And on the defensive end, he cant guard two guards any better than AI can. Not to mention he doesnt have the respect of his team-mates enough for him to be leading the team the way a point guard has to lead.

So while this team has the games greatest combo guard in AI and a stud in JR at the two, the team is still handicapped by their coaching situation and weak front court.

I gotta agree with every word ambiglight said.......he kind of hit it on the dot. We don't have a dominant front court like many of these winning teams.....Hopefully Nene and Kmart can get their **** together.

So what are you guys saying? Iverson needs an all star team around him in order to be effective?

Enough excuses already, suck it up and play some damn ball. I don't know if Iverson is hurt, upset for not getting an extension or for not being named a Captain or what is wrong with him, but so far in this young season. Carter>>>>>Iverson. I also didn't like the way that we were trying to run the ball through Melo on offense in the Lakers game. We didn't look nearly as effective as a team compared to when we ran the offense through Nene the night before.
