Analyzing Billups a little...
i keep reading threads where people say this is a lateral move for denver, or we're overrating chauncey billups if we (as fans) like this move, or billups will help just because he's a true point guard (as if any pg that can ball handle and pass would make the same difference he will).
bogus.
i don't think those people realize just how good of a player billups is. he's like the tim duncan of point guards (OMG...you just overrated him so much!)....no, not that he has that much of an impact, otherwise he'd have quite a few more rings. more so that he has no flash, isn't all that athletic or quick, doesn't put up huge stats....but at the end of the day, he wins at a high rate and he's his teams biggest reason for winning. and all the 'advanced' statistics back that up.
in fact they're pretty staggering.
last season in 78 games he had a PER of 23.2, 11th best in the league. better than Williams, Nash, Melo, Wade, Iverson & Pierce. he also had a TS% of 62, again 11th best in the league, and only two players that shoot any 3's ranked higher (steve nash & mike miller). he ranked 3rd in offensive rating, he was 5th best in the league in offensive win shares, and 6th best in overall win shares. and he led detroit in +/-. for comparisons sake, iverson had the 22nd best PER, was 61st in TS%, and didn't rank in the top 20 in any win shares category.
06-07 he had the 26th best PER (21.5), 24th best TS% (59.1), led detroit again in +/-. ranked 2nd in offensive rating (only nash was higher), 6th in offensive win shares, 11th in overall win shares. again to compare iverson was 41st in PER and 114th in TS% and didn't rank top 20 in offensive rating or win shares.
in 05-06 he had the 7th best TS% (60.2%), 12th best PER (23.6), was 1st in offensive rating, 2nd in offensive win shares and 6th overall. (melo was 20th, iverson was 11th and 14th respectively)
and he did all that while being in the slowest, most half court offense in the league with few open court easy scoring opportunities or freebie assists.
chauncey is a baller.
imagine we traded iverson for deron williams. i'm pretty sure most analysts and realgm pundits would have us winning a ton of games and going pretty far in the playoffs. guess what? billups has at least that same level of impact in the nba, and his impact is far greater than iverson's in every sense but ppg.
that's all not to mention how perfectly he fits with the nuggets current makeup and how just by being on the court he'll solve almost all our teams issues (including the ones we had while dre was running the show). we have one of the best iso scorers in basketball who's never had the court spread for him in his career and looks to have made strides in his ability & willingness to pass. with smith (TS% of 60) poised to take over the starting spot by january (if not get atleast 30mpg off the bench), melo will be playing 1v1 15 feet from the basket on a consistent basis...that's death for opponents. we also have a team that gets reckless, frustrated and loses their focus/composure too often (namely jr, kleiza, melo & kmart)....billups is the anti-nugget in that way. he's always calm, collected and focused, and with him running the point and being the leader there's absolutely no way that won't rub off on the rest of the team. furthermore, we were very turnover prone last season (14.4 per game...26th in the league), while billups has a nearly 4-1 a/to ratio and led the team that was #1 in fewest turnovers per game. we didn't shoot the 3 well last year, billups is one of the premiere 3 point shooters in the league. we were bottom half in ft% last year, billups shoots consistently above 90%.
the more i look into this, the more i love this trade...and can't see how others wouldn't agree. do all the stats lie?
now we just need to kidnap AC and use our TPE on a big that can rebound and we'll be a legit contender this season and for the next 3.

I thought this was going to be a interesting topic, but then I got to the part where you used PER to prove how Billups is better than other players. No, he's not better than Iverson, Deron, Wade, Nash or Pierce.
And I also wouldn't call him the biggest reason for them winning. NO STAT TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH (Melo fans know this the most as people used the +/- stat to prove his affect on games). The Pistons winning had alot to do with their style and the players that was on the team with Billups. Not exactly because Billups led them. Sorry, but take that stuff somewhere else because I'm not buying it. Sheed, Prince, and Rip all had a equal part.
Second, Billups hasn't been "MR BIG SHOT" since they won the championship, so I would like for that to gtfo aswell.
Billups is a good player, we made a decent trade (would've been great if we kept Dice), but stop overrating him. And yes, YOU OVERRATED HIM WHEN YOU CALLED HIM THE TIM DUNCAN OF POINT GUARDS! I don't care what reason you used as to why you made that comparison.
Billups is/will be a great fit on this team, but the fact that all of you started to get pissed because I made some comments on him in the game thread is unbelievable. Thats probably the reason for this thread. I DON'T CARE HOW HE'S SUPPOSE TO FIT, when I post in the game thread. I DON'T CARE WHAT HE'S GOING TO BRING TO THE TABLE, when I post in the game thread. The game thread is soley for me to make comments on what's going on in that specific game.

i didn't say or "prove" he's better than all those players. i said his PER's better. its a different thing, and its for the reader to decide how much emphasis they want to put into that statistic. but it tends to be pretty reliable and a good measuring stick of what a player does in comparison to others being that its a pace & minute adjusted stat giving varying (and justifiable) levels of significance to each specific boxscore stat. and i'd say if you combine knowledge of a player, their tendency to win, their actual p/r/a stats with a PER, their +/-, their offensive ratings...etc, you can get a pretty good read on how much they impact a game in relation to another player (say, williams).
And I also wouldn't call him the biggest reason for them winning. NO STAT TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH (Melo fans know this the most as people used the +/- stat to prove his affect on games). no question they're all good and it was a good team. but through all of it, billups put up the best stats and had the best on/off court +/-, i'd say that makes him the leader and the best player. the next best PER to billups last year was hamilton at #52 in the nba.
And yes, YOU OVERRATED HIM WHEN YOU CALLED HIM THE TIM DUNCAN OF POINT GUARDS! I don't care what reason you used as to why you made that comparison.
you should care, as it was very important in my post.
i compared their styles and that they seem to win pretty consistently, not much more. i think it'd be very difficult for an intelligent nba fan to legitimately disagree with that simplistic statement.

no, its not the [only] reason for this thread. and no, the game threads aren't solely for you to make comments in (with no basis/support/argument for them). sorry.

MR. Bigshot does not approve this message.
Sorry Peanut, I couldn't resist the opportunity once it presented itself

All that isn't necessary.
Fact is, he's a top 5 pg. We were planning on dumping AI and signing a big time pg right? I don't think we could have done any better than CB. Playoff player, floor general, moves the ball, defends, minimum mistakes, and a premier shooter. There simply isn't a better pg available than that.
All those stats are great, but they can just as easily mean nothing.

^^^ All of those stats are great, and you are correct they might not mean anything while B-B-B-Billups is with the Nuggets. But I don't see anything wrong with digging into the numbers of a newly acquired player and getting excited about what you discover. I have seen quite a few adjusted stats lately by Nuggets fans tying to analyze the production that we will get from Billups and it is something that I am interested in finding out myself, but I prefer the wait and see approach. How well does he Jell with the rest of the team (chemistry on the court) because if he doesn't mesh with the club then the numbers are useless.
However, I still like looking at the numbers because like Corona said they are great indicators of what you are getting and what you are giving up in a trade, and don't think for a second that Scouts and GM's don't use these stats for player evaluations and trades because they do.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it. I just think it's futile to build your case off that. They're definitely interesting statistics, but they can be easily dismissed by someone trying to argue that this was a bad trade, and deservingly so. They are mostly pretty irrelevant at this point. Whole new team; whole new situations. I believe the point of this thread was to answer those critics, was it not?

at the end of the day, he wins at a high rate and he's his teams biggest reason for winning. and all the 'advanced' statistics back that up.
I took that to be the point and then he tried to back it up with the statistics that he provided. He wasn't talking about the people who would argue that this is a bad trade because I think that he wanted those people to post there own thoughts and reasons for thinking that way, learn from some of it, and form a new opinion through his analysis.
What more can he really go on besides the prior stats of the players traded and the stats of the teams that they played on?
When it is all said and done, time is the determining factor in any trade. But he is giving his reasons prior to time determining the real outcome as to why he likes it. I also liked the trade.

I personally would take him in a heart beat over Nash and Iverson. While there is no reason for me to post what I think is wrongs with AI's game, the difference in Billups being with this team for one game, was a huge difference. Not only was the spacing better, but the passing was better, and we did not have the opposing guards practicing their layup line throughout the game like they ahd been. As for Nash, his defense is as bad as Iverson's, and his stats this year show how much his numbers depended on being in the perfect system for his game. Now do that take that to mean that I think Nash is a bad player, just that he has went from being seen as a very good player (which he is) to being viewed as a top 3 pg based on stats he put up while basically being the only player that had control of the ball constantly in a high pace offense.
As for Pierce it is basically a toss up, although I do not rate Pierce nearly as high as many seem to these days, which could be the reason for that. He is another player that has benefited from having a hall of famer in the middle, and one of the top shooters in the game on the wing. It has led to his defense becoming overated which I personally think is actually on the same level as Melo's, and his offense at it's best was never as versatile as Melo's has become. The other thing about him is that people continue to call him a good rebounder while getting 6.4 rebounds per game, while Melo is called one dimensional while putting up 7.4 rebound per game last year.
Peanut wrote:And I also wouldn't call him the biggest reason for them winning. NO STAT TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH (Melo fans know this the most as people used the +/- stat to prove his affect on games). While I agree that stats do not tell the while story, they can help to tell a story. The fact of the matter though is that Billups was the best player on the Pistons, he is the one responsible for getting Hamilton those wide open shots, getting Prince the ball where he could do something with it, and not getting the ball to Sheed to shoot them out of games. So in this case I must disagree with you, I do think that Billups was the reason they were winning so many games.
Peanut wrote:Second, Billups hasn't been "MR BIG SHOT" since they won the championship, so I would like for that to gtfo aswell.
Who cares what people call him? I mean honestly does it really matter that they call him mr big shot?

I think you are misunderstanding when he said the Tim Duncan of point guards, not that he is as good as Duncan, but because of his style many people forget how good he really is.

i personally was not pissed at what you posted, in fact until I read this thread I had not even seen what you posted, although I must say you seemed a little upset about my post. AS for the game, if you honestly believe that he did nothing to help the team win? If you do not think the team moved much better with and without the ball, that there was more and better passing, and the defense was significantly improved, there is nothing anyone can say to you as you have obviously decided to not like what you were going to see prior to the game.
I know you were upset after the trade, but I must ask you why? What would make this trade a great trade? What did you want the team to get back in a trade, especially considering the way you felt about AI. Hell I personally think they did a hell of a job getting an allstar PG who fits with the team, a young big, and the chance to try to convince a backup big that fits perfectly to actually come to Denver. The front office went a long way towards filling this teams holes, and getting pieces that actually will fit around Melo. The fact of the matter is that as recently as a month ago, Detroit fans where having heart attacks about the idea of trading Billups for anybody but Melo. So once again I must ask what you really wanted in a AI deal?

Re: Analyzing Billups a little...
My take on his first game is he's finding a rhythm. He took an extra helping of shots and didn't make most of them, but we did see a couple of clutch shots and that will be the important thing.
Difference between having AI on the floor and Billups is Melo now gets an extra dose of going to the basket and has a man to kick out to who also knows how to kick it back in to the paint, let alone shoot 40% from range.
Not to mention all the in-control possessions that we will have down the stretch. The first game will be looked at as one of Chauncey's weaker performances, but it was still not bad.
The one thing I would like to see Billups improve on in tonight's game vs. Grizzlies is leading the way in protecting the ball and give us that assist to turnover ratio we're looking for. I think 3.5 to 1 would be a great beginning.

At the end of the last post I made. I had something similar to what you just typed, but I deleted it just in case you felt differently.

I don't think Corona wanted this thread to go in the direction it is going in. I think he wanted to get inside the numbers with the numbers of the people opposing the trade.
But any post opens up coulds and shoulds. I will use one of yours as an example:

How did you arrive at the fact that he is a top 5 pg? Stats

It is crazy that we are all arguing over something that we all seem to agree on.

Re: Analyzing Billups a little...
All I know is that we ran at least four different offensive sets on Friday with multiple looks out of each set. The two that I noticed really show how much Chauncey will impact the team. The first is where we spread the court with four players on the baseline with chauncey up top. That's our main iso set, because we use that regardless of who's carrying the ball up the floor. We ran this to death in the first half, and we just looked awkward and awful-- a few times I saw Billups slap his hands, demanding the ball back after he saw what this play is designed to do.
The newest set that I saw involves 2 players down low on the blocks, 1 on the edge of the box on the free throw line, and Carmelo/Kleiza split out on the same side as the player on the free throw line. This look was extremely versatile and had at least three plays with cutters run out of it. Did you read that? Cutters. As the game went on, we ran this play almost exclusively. There were still some iso's for 'Melo and JR, but Chauncey effectively cut one terrible set out of our playbook.
That's all we need to know about the impact Chauncey has on this team.

Once our guys realize they have a playmaker and a shooter to kick out to constantly they won't be hanging out in isoville all day long. Chauncey can get it and reset it a lot faster than Carter, AI, Camby (i.e. point center). I like the idea of Kleiza hanging out in the corner and shooting or driving baseline, JR coming from the corner of the key, Melo a little closer in and K-Mart/Nene hanging out/posting. All we need is two drivers, one shooter, and a rebounder, with the drivers actively rebounding. Now that Chauncey can be a shooter we just need those drives to finish right.
Some of those layups are just going at the glass too hard. Softer hands.

Good Post.
It freaked me out seeing some semblance of structure out there on the offensive end. I was equally impressed with what I saw from him on the defensive end. He seems to direct traffic on both ends of the floor well. On defense he was trying to run his man into double teams instead of getting beat and giving up, and he isn't afraid to drop down and rebound on defense or on offense, but when he does it on offense someone on the wing needs to slide over and cover the backcourt because we got burned on it a couple of times.

That's going to be up to JR/Kleiza/Carter ...but I like JR around the rim more to grab some of those high bounces. Who's the better defender in the open court?
put the ball in the basket like this

I think that if Carter is in the game, he needs to be the guy doing it. If Kleiza and JR are both on the court it is a toss up because they rebound pretty equally IMO, but Kleiza does like to try and leak out, so he should probably be the guy in that lineup that drops back. Will it happen that way? Probably not.
