Keeping up with Jones a good start

Post#1 » by el loco » Sun Nov 23, 2008 8:34 pm

Since he entered the Nuggets' lineup, he sparked an altruistic attitude in the altitude. He plays team-first, team-second. And he plays defense like the first quarter is the fourth quarter. That's right, Dahntay Jones has jolted the Nuggets (oh, and Chauncey Billups has helped, too).

While Billups' homecoming is cause for a hootenanny, there has been an underlying story line to the new-look Nuggets, and that's the new shooting guard Jones. He averages 18.5 minutes per game — eighth on the Nuggets — and Jones has started every game since the Allen Iverson-Billups trade, often setting the tone with his hungry defense. It's safe to say that the Nuggets' master plan wasn't to trade Iverson in order to create a starting job for Jones. But since Jones' insertion into the lineup, it's as if the Denver chemists have cooked up a perfect formula.

"He's a runner and a defender. My first unit has a tendency of committing to running up and down the court hard," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "The pace of the game is important to me. Sometimes in the past, convincing a team to play at the pace I want has been difficult. Guys who play 35 or 40 minutes have a tendency to conserve their energy, and that's not how I want to play.

"You need one guy in the starting lineup who spikes up their commitment."

GK is an idiot and so is the guy that wrote this article. Jones has been torched in a bunch of our first quarters. Mayo had a career night against us and it started in the 1st quarter, I think he went for 17 in the 1st when we played them. Jones is the worst rebounding guard on the team.

its such bogus.

he has a PER of 9.4 at SG, which is simply terrible...while his opponent PER at sg is 19. his +/- is terrible. he averages more turnovers than assists. hasn't made a 3 this season. his FT% has plummeted since the first couple games, he doesn't rebound well....ad nauseum.

and to top it all off...statistically speaking denver's defense is better without him on the court. by 5 points per 100 possessions.

and whats even more pathetic is that he's playing almost exclusively with the starting unit...yet still can't produce worth a rats ass.

karl pisses me off.

and to take this further...

look at the billups/smith/melo/martin/nene 5 man unit compared to others.
123 offensive points per 100 possessions vs. 76 defensive points allowed per 100 possessions. they have the best +/- of any unit. they have the second best rebound rate. and they don't play together. how dumb is that?

Karl is always saying he wants a "spark" off the bench. JR would make a great starter and Jones would make a great spark.

I didn't realize that it was that effective because I haven't been able to see that lineup on the floor much at all this season. It is like GK is our own worst enemy. Common friggen sense should tell GK to run JR with the starters.

I can see our future if this guy sticks around for several more years. We might not be able to go out and get a top caliber player from free agency, but every journeyman/dleaguer that has bounced around the league can get big minutes in Denver.

i'd keep Karl this season unless we got to 50%.

if we dont win a championship... then get Avery or a Lakers/Celtics assistant coach over here.

I honestly don't mind Jones... I think he's a better signing than I thought.

He moves well without the ball and makes sure the ball keeps moving. Mostly because he's not an option on offense. But the guy can cut to the basket, I think Billups and he as well as the rest of the team will develop better chemistry as in they will know better where his sweet spots are, his tendencies. I like his physical defense although granted he's been burned.

But his energy, physical plays are pluses... it energizes the team. If J.R. can be as physical and not reluctant with contact, he'd be really improved.

I'm still far more sick of the Carter/Billups lineup. The idea, I thought, was to acquire a PG to play PG, whereas all too often we have AC handling the ball, with Billups playing the off guard. Very annoying.

I like Jones starting an JR Smith coming off the bench. He brings in the fire power that the bench needs.
I also like Jones' defensive intensity
