How to win Round #1 vs Hornets

Post#1 » by sportsmikegm23 » Thu Apr 16, 2009 4:57 am

Ok... Home court advantage and all, but how do we beat the Hornets????

My thoughts...

all 12 players have a committment and focus on defensive.
Rebounding.
Getting shooters off the 3 pt line.
Trying to keep CP3 out of the paint as much as possible.
*****************Limit turnovers!!!!!!!!!

If Chandler is 80% or more...the Nuggets are going to be in a very tough series.
CP3 is a monster and we don't have anyone to match up with him...
The last time in New Orleans we played them, we doubled him and it worked, but
B. Scott should be ready for that.

Let's GO NUGGETS!!!!!

The only thing that scares me is their three point shooting and the treatment Chris Paul is going to get with his flopping.

David West also always kills us, so hopefully Kenyon mans up and contains him a bit.

Stay on their shooters and REBOUND.

that's all... if we can do that, then we could take them down in 5.

The 2poor series should be pretty good. But I think 2poor will be back on these boards by seasons end as the Nuggets take care of them in 5.

1. Defend pick&roll.
2. Rebound.
3. Don't give 3PT shooters space.

I agree about the rebounding. I would look more into rebounding our own shots and not jacking up unwarranted jumpers at the wrong time when there are no Nuggets near the rim.

Utilize JR's ability to get to the rim. Utilize Melo's ability to get to the rim. If either fails, both go through the basket and pass off to Nene or Kenyon for a dunk. Utilize Kleiza around the rim and forget about desperation 3s from him for now. Let Chauncey shoot 3s or drive and dish.

Don't have Kenyon and Nene spend the first 5 minutes shooting mid range jumpers. Don't have Melo iso and fade. Don't rely on Jones to be an offensive force and get him out if he's hurting more than helping early on. Don't do fancy behind the back dribbles or try to thread a needle through a wall of defenders.

Utilize timeouts early and slow the momentum the first time it picks up for the Hornets.

Don't take a player out of the game if he's got a hot hand and the heat check has found he is still hot. Take it all the way to the win.

Most definitely rebound. If you don't rebound you are giving up half your opportunities.

Utilize the pass the dissect the defense if no one can penetrate. Make the passes direct, undetectable, and smart.

We are lucky in that our biggest strength (getting fouled and getting to the line) exposes their bigest weakness (god awful bench).

We need to attack, attack, attack. Pick up fouls on the Hornet snad make them beat us with guys like Sean Marks and Antonio Daniels.

Don't forget the referees hate us, so exposing that weakness may not be as easy at it sounds. So we would need a counter strategy if the whistles aren't blowing our way. Like good passing. If a good pass is made and someone's still hacked it makes much more sense for the ref to blow the whistle, even if they are not inclined to do it. They tend not to take to the overly aggressive iso plays.

The Nugs get to the line A LOT. The refs may suck but with 1 or 2 exceptions they don't hate the Nugs.

The Nugs gotta box out on the defensive glass- and that includes boxing out the shooters on any long range shots.

Nene needs to keep his composure and pressure the NO frontcourt, get more fouls on them than he draws.

KMart cannot take wack mid-range jumpers in the 1st half. And he better show up on D. He has a tendency to take "easy" games off and show up in big ones, but the Nugs need him to show up.

Melo's gotta attack the basket.

Free JR on the screens- he'll be looking to torch his old coach.

It starts with george karl and his defensive strategy, if he has the guy's playing great defense and find a way to trap chris paul and be succesful like we did against them the last game up in new orleans then the nuggets should be in great shape to take the series.

Second. Nene needs to keep his head up and not get frustrated and let the hornets big get into his head, keep playing like you did before the all star break big fella, nugs going to need him to produce.

Third. The bench, i see no reason why we won't win this battle. Hornets bench are awful and no one outside of james posey is much of a threat, jr smith and chris andersen should do well well against these guy's and being former players of that team brings that extra motivation, ac is going to be very important as his defense on paul will be crucial, hopefully he'll stop throwing those touchdown passes that he so often loves.

Fourth. The stars battle, carmelo vs west and billups vs paul. I don't think chauncey stands a chance at staying in front of paul, no one does, but if he can get his outside shot going and make plays for his teammates then he can offset what paul gets on him. I can see melo have a huge series here, and were going to need it. No one on the hornets have a chance at guarding him, im expecting alot from carmelo this year playoffs. Kenyon guarding west would be a great matchup, kmart got the height and quickness to harress west, im hoping marting can limit west production and he does chris paul can't win on his own.

Lastly, with all that said i got the nugs in 6 baby.
