Ike Diogu
Guys, what do you think about Ike as our backup PF?
Great college player, very nice guy (knew him when he was with GSW). Long and athletic and can hit a 15 ftr.
I think he's the perfect backup big for us. Can run the floor, post up, and hit a jumper. Not bad defensively either. From what I hear, he's a UFA and won't be re-signing with the kings....
LOVE this lineup:
Billups/AC/Lawson
JR/Affalo/Weems
Melo/Kleiza/Balkman
Kmart/Diogu
Nene/Anderson/Hunter/Petro
I'd also be for picking up Drew Gooden or Joe Smith, but Diogu's younger and has more potential upside.
Thoughts?

Um.. Ike played only 29 games last year, 30 before that, 42, 17, then 69.
That's a lot of missed games. He looks like he could be nice, but it'd be a waste signing him if he can't stay healthy.

Re: Ike Diogu
well Ike measured 6 feet and 6.5 inches barefoot and lists at 6'8 in shoes. The plus on that is his 7'3.5' wingspan and 9'1 standing reach makes up for it. Sheldon Williams for instance is a little taller... but he has the wingspan of Wee-man. That being said Diogu is a strong player with offensive skills that would surprise the average denver fan. At the end of the year for Sactown he had some monster games. Against us last April he dropped 32 points on 14 of 20 shooting and grabbed 11 boards.
So yea I'd consider him but he's not an athlete and he's certainly doesn't run the floor like a deer. But if you are high on Ike you definiately should be high on Bajramovic. Although even he is off the international market. I wouldn't just dismiss Diogu.. he is worth discussing.

Ike won't get the minutes he thinks he deserves here.

Um....and you think all those games missed were because of injury? I'd bet the majority of them are DNP-CDs....ya know, being a young end of the bench player.
You got 5 seasons worth a games there too, which is pretty weird considering he has only been in the league 4 years(he was traded midway through the 06/07 season, as well as last season). If you actually looked a little deeper than spending 3 seconds looking at his career stats page, you'd realize this stuff.
Ike Diogu would be a nice pickup, and I've read that our FO does have some interest in him. He absolutely destroyed us last year, with 32 and 11 on 70% shooting. Then went out and put up 28 and 13 in his next game. He has talent(which is why he was taken 9th overall), but just has never really gotten a real shot(15 mpg is his career high, and that was in his rookie season).

Yeah, I missed that. My bad. And I could be wrong about him being injured, but I did look deeper in to his stats. I checked 82games and liked the percentage on his jump shot I found. That's why I thought he would be nice to have, if he doesn't have any injury problems.

It was 32 and that really isn't too hard for some no-name to do against the Nuggets.

I'd say that the monster game he had against us last season is worth whatever we have left of the MLE.

We better use it quick to sign Ike before it's too late to resist the Skita temptation.

In the small minutes he plays, he averages monster stats. Seriously look them up... they're as good as most All-Star bigs.
I'd love him here.

Indeed. 7 and 4 in less than 15 minutes(his career high) is damn good. He seems like he would be capable of stepping in and playing 25-30 minutes a night if/when Kenyon or Nene gets injured as well, that's the biggest thing in my mind. We need more then just a decent backup big, we need one who could start in case of injury. Birdman is one of the best backup bigs in the league right now, but I wouldn't really want him to start in those instances, and I don't think Karl does either(which is why Petro and Balkman did most of the time last year).

If diogu was so good, why the hell is he now getting run off from his 4th **** team? Not to mention that at least 5 coaches have refused to give him steady minutes?

Re: Ike Diogu
that's what i always wonder.
i've seen him play in big chunks of starting minutes a couple of times, and he's damn good.
he's an average defender though... lol.

wonder how many people asked Joe Dumars that. Joe what do you see in this Billups guy? He's already bounced around to 4 teams. You really want him as your starting point guard? He was drafted way too high. He's a bust.
Anyways your logic just doesn't pan out. Diogu could very well turn into a good backup big for the Nuggets.

Part of his not getting minutes is that on two different teams he played behind the same guy (Troy Murphy) and in Portland it was understandable why he didn't get many minutes because of who he was playing behind. I just wish that he was a little taller than he is, but his wingspan is better then I thought it was, actually his wingspan is pretty damned good. The pickings for decent free agents is getting to the slim and none point and this is the time of the year where trades usually start to occur. Hopefully, Denver will be rumored in one or two of them.
I could live with an Ike Diogu signing and it wouldn't hurt my feelings any if the Nuggets chose not to sign him either. They had a couple of decent looking bigs on the summer league team that would be cheaper than Ike would be.

Really, you are going to try to compare Billups, who was still able to get minutes at every stop he made even while teams tried to figure out what to do with him, to a guy that has trouble getting onto the court even playing for teams that need bigs?
The fact of the matter is that he has played a combined 59 games over the last three years. So once again, why is he being ran off from his 4th team in the last 4 years, with his now former team opting to resign an injury prone perpetually out of shape backup PF? a couple of big games every year does not make him a player. The Kings refused to even offer him a minimum deal.
Do people not remember the guys who put up 50 point games and disappear the next year? Hell one of the worst contracts in the league was for Jerome James, after he put up 17.2ppg on 58% shooting with 9.4 rebounds a game in one 5 game playoff series. Something does not add up with Diogu, whether he does not show the effort most times, or he is just good at taking advantage of the end of the season lack of effort from other teams, the guy is overhyped for providing next to nothing 90% of the time he is in the game.

I will give you that Diogu did not fit Nelly's system in Golden State. But in Indy they had a rotation of Foster, Murphy, and an injury prone J O'Neal who only played 42 games Diogu's last season there. Portland on the other hand has a solid starting PF, and two centers, in fact they feel they need another PF bad enough that they just offered Millsap a 4 yr $32 million deal last week, yet they traded him. The Kings have nobody outside of Hawes and Thompson in their front court last year, yet Diogu could only get in 10 games?
While the guy is undersized that has not stopped other undersized PFs around the league if they were good enough to play heavy minutes, the got those minutes. That argument is not something I am buying. He has been on several teams with the chance to earn some sort of regular minutes, and cannot seem to get that done, so once again my question is why.

If we are out of options, and he is brought in with the thought of being the 5th or 6th big, then I guess you bring him in. But there is no way in hell I give him more then the minimum, and i do not give him a deal unless there are no other real options. I must say though that I would prefer if they brought in Giles from the summer league team to be the 6th big.
