It means more to the Yanks to have a strong shot at one of their players holding the all time HR record. F the money.

I don't know what is more pathetic: A-Rod begging and crawling on his knees for the Yankees to take him back or that Cashman and Co. folded like bitches and broke their statement not to re-sign A-Rod

Well, you can't have both. If A-Rod crawled back, the Yankees aren't the bitches in this situation. Apparently, they signed him on their terms. The same terms A-Rod rejected earlier.

It makes a lot of sense. Just like Rangers were dumb enough to give him 25m when the next closest offer was 17m range , Yankees are doing the same.
If they don't sign him, they have a gaping hole at 3rd. Without Arod they don't even make the playoffs. He is the best player in the game, and would leave the Yankees with a gaping hole at 3rd.

I think they would much rather spend 27/year for Arod then trade multiple extremely talented prospects for Cabrera.

Except ARod allegedly got a similar offer from another team. Say what you will about ARod's new deal (the length is much more of a concern to me than the money total), but they didn't outbid themselves. They paid the stiff price for the best hitter in baseball in a free agent's market.
