He sucks going back to back days so if we ever plan on having a winning streak we needed a closer.

Oh that and the fact that he walks over 5 batters per 9 innings.

Gagne is worth the risk at this point. 10 million, so what, teams spend that on garbage players all the time that dont pan out! If he sucks, goodbye! If not, who knows another year or two may be an option. Point is the Brewers needed a closer, a proven closer! Coco sucked in Texas before he turned it around in Milwaukee. You cant say Gagne isnt proven, he won the Cy three years ago and had probably had the best season ever as a closer in MLB history! Turnbow will not be the closer, you dont pay a guy 10 mil to be a set up man.

Brewers did the right thing, good move. Gagne will bounce back.... Low risk, high reward is the perfect way to explain it!

Coco had a very good tenure in Texas, he had half a bad season and the Brewers bounced on him. Check his stats out in Texas prior to coming to Milwaukee.

Gagne WAS proven but the Gagne you just signed is a shell of the Cy Young winner. The reason he hasn't done squat since winning the Cy Young award is because he's been injured so often. His pitched well in Texas but his stats are inflated by a bit of luck because his peripheral stats don't explain his success. He also completely lost control of his secondary pitches in Boston. The basic rule for pitchers is if they lose their control, something's wrong in the elbow; if they lose velocity then something is wrong with the shoulder. Gagne has already had TJ surgery so in reality, it would have been better to have lost his velocity because it could simply be shoulder fatigue rather than structural damage. He took a few weeks to rest up his shoulder because he said it was tired from all the side work he was doing and it didn't help. Maybe there is nothing structural wrong with his elbow but his previous history points to anything being wrong with his elbow as being bad news, even if it appears benign. I bet Gagne spends half the season on the DL. mahalo

I wish I could find the splits for his Texas and Boston periods but all I can get is the full season. Gagne threw 90 curveballs last season, 40 went for balls, four for hits(44% ball rate). He threw 189 change-ups and 71 were for balls, and he gave up 14 hits (37% ball rate). He threw 322 fastball, 110 for balls and 17 for hits (34%). Now if you look at those percentages, it shows he did a better job locating his fastball for strikes (or perceived strikes) than he did his two off-speed pitches. His change-up, one of the nastiest pitches in the big leagues prior to his injuries, was more hittable than his fastball. So when you combine the fact that guys were getting better wood on his change than his fastball and that he couldn't locate his secondary stuff as well, you can see why he had to rely on his fastball so much and why he was less effective.

And, like I said, this are season total numbers. If you don't believe his control was lack luster in Boston, look at his walk rate. 3.24/9 in Milwaukee, 4.33 in Boston. Funny enough, his K rate actually rose in Boston. He also gave up 3 more hits in Boston despite pitching 15 innings less. His control was off and he was much more hittable in Boston and this is a result of his inability to command his secondary pitches and his over-reliance on his fastball. Hopefully, for you guys, it was just fatigue but that elbow scares me. mahalo
