Teams can offer players all the money in the world, but they can't make them sign the contract.

Detroit receiving 3 unproven prospects doesn't mean **** compared to exchanging them for the reigning b2b Cy Young award winning pitcher making 32mil a year. It's not like LA isn't the reigning b2b WS winners and 3 in 6yrs.

Love the Dodgers and I like when teams actually spend money to compete, but this is probably the last time such a trade ever happens in MLB. The lockout will definitely make this impossible, salary cap or not.

Theres nothing meaningful basketball-wise to talk about until October, other than a couple singular threads when the Duren/Watson stand-offs get resolved. I'm sure it's all going to come out in the following days why Skubal didn't become a Brewer, Phillie or Brave.

The Dodgers paid what Detroit asked for and the other teams didn't.

Other teams like Brewers and Rays need their prospects to keep future payrolls low. Dodgers can trade away all their prospects and just fill the roster with more all-star free agents because their local TV revenues are so much more than other teams except a couple.

The belief is that they did this trade partly to keep Skubal from other contenders since their starters already have the lowest ERA in baseball.

Anyways more fuel to the CBA negotiations.

A better example is Kareem wins a title in Milwaukee and then the Lakers get him because only they can afford his salary demands. Back then, no salary cap, no revenue sharing of any kind, no big NBA TV money. It was purely big vs. small market. I think it’s also what happened with Wilt ending up with Lakers at end of his career but Kareem would have many more huge seasons in LA including the Showtime championship run.

Can the Dodgers be next?

He seems to be in a hurry to raise cash because he may have improperly used money from insurance companies to buy sports teams.

The deferred contracts to Ohtani and others are controversial and may be what owners try to ban in the next CBA. But they seem to be a Mark Walter thing, doing financial arrangements which are sketchy and now apparently under federal investigation.

Not the Dodgers contracts necessarily but Walter’s dealings in general.
