Actually, the poster was talking in general terms, so it is a very relevant point. Too much protein can be a bad thing, period.

It's not relevant to Prince Fielder's health, so it's not relevant to this thread.

. I think he/she was implying that protein is a bit overrated in relation to it's importance w/ performance

It's not.

Plus, if you regularly eat tofu, you grow a vagina. True fact, you can look it up.

Prince Fielder just became one of my favorite professional athletes.
I especially love that he's quitting meat for moral reasons.

Way to go, sir!

The same amount of meat will still be consumed. I'm picking up his meat intake. I've already upgraded my pants size.

So let me recap all the pros and cons:

Reasons not to eat meat:

- The nutritional value can be replicated by a well-planned vegetarian diet.
- A vegetarian diet also has clear-cut nutritional advantages (less saturated fat, less risk of excessive protein), to say nothing of the hormones that are often injected into the animals.
- The animals are not treated or slaughtered as humanely as we would like to believe.
- Animal farming causes environmental damage; methane is a greenhouse gas, and widespread grazing can lead to soil erosion.
- Animal farming is also inefficient; the grain that is used to feed animals results in a net decrease in output by volume.

Reasons to eat meat:

- Them animals is tasty!

Gonna go have some bacon now. Mmmmmmmmmmmm, bacon. Om nom nom nom nom.

One of the biggest myths around is that the phyto-estrogens in tofu (soy in general) can, over time, have a feminizing effect.

I eat more tofu than everyone on this forum put together, for years, and people question all of the time if I'm really a vegetarian...

Chach wrote:We are not talking about normal people, we are talking about athletes. Yes, the point is a good point when discussing the dietary habits of you or I but in terms of a high performance athlete, what you or I ingest is irrelevant. Because Prince is going to be spending several hours a day lifting weights/stretching/running/swinging a large piece of wood, he is going to create million of micro-tears in his muscles and he is going to need protein to repair those. Getting the 60-80 grams that would be normal or safe for you or I is going to leave him considerably sore in the morning and will continue to compound the situation. I lift for maybe 5 hours a week and if I don't get over 100 grams of protein a day, especially on the days I lift, I am sore as hell the next day. It's certainly not the only factor (sleep, stretching, alcohol) but protein intake is one of the top priorities for an athlete like Prince.

The new PED of choice in baseball isn't HGH. It's too expensive, less effective, and too hard to get ahold of. Today, the new drug is insulin because it is easily obtainable (because of diabetes) and it does WONDERS for the body in terms of recovery and hypertrophy. Weight lifters are using it more and more now too. It helps pack on muscle during the off-season and helps a player recover during the season to keep them from really falling down exhausted come August/September. But in order for that insulin to do any good for a player, he is going to need the protein in his system to synthesize the amino acids into muscle fibers. Protein intake is a big part of staying healthy in sports. mahalo

How do explain a breatharian (someone that only lives on oxygen) that is able at 135 pds to lift more than Mr. universe?

Protein is not nearly as relevant as you imply especially in a low impact, low resistance game like baseball. Plus, consumption of protein is moot if your water intake isn't sufficient.

The reality is that Prince Fielder can still perform at a high-level even if he took in half the amount of protein he does now, but from plant sources. Remember, plant protein is assimilated by the body better, as a general rule, plus it doesn't put the strain on your kidney's that animal protein does.

Alright bro, when Prince is dying in August because his muscles can't recover from the daily grind of baseball (just because it's not high impact like football doesn't mean it doesn't wear you out on the muscular level), we will see how much the protein means for him. I'm not saying it can't be done, there are exceptions to every rule. I'd never **** with a Shaolin monk but it has nothing to do with his diet, it has to do with fact that they are some of the most discplined and mentall tough people on the planet, have trained most of their lives, and are badasses. If Prince is getting only 100 grams of protein a day, considering the life he has lived up until this point, he is going to be dying come August 1st. mahalo

You realize there are such things as, like, protein shakes, right? My boy Prince can add a half-cup of chocolate syrup and 4 packs of Splenda to that **** and he's all set, he'll be drinking 5 shakes a day.

But wait, did TUZ actually refer to a breatharian? :o

And you have a vagina. I can tell because you're clearly getting sand in it. Also, your sarcasm-o-meter is apparently turned off.

Exactly. Why is this protein debate going on when Prince Fielder can go to GNC and get all the protein powder he needs?
