I'm still trying to get my head around the idea of Oakland going after the league's most prominent speedy out-maker.

The San Francisco Chronicle is retracting its report that the A's have expressed interest in Juan Pierre.
Undisclosed major league sources were responsible for the original news, which A's sources later shot down. The only way Pierre to Oakland would make sense is if the A's would also be given someone like Andy LaRoche in return for taking on part of the outfielder's contract. Something like the Odalis Perez trade, when the Dodgers gave the Royals the left-hander and two prospects in return for Elmer Dessens.

No way in heck Beane goes after a player with such a low Reina Value.

Praise be!
Although I love the thought of Beane fleecing Coletti out of LaRoche just for taking Pierre off his hands.

You have it all wrong...sure, Pierre has a miserable OBP, no power, takes horrible routes in the OF and can't throw, but the guy is a Reina Value monster: he should be making 14% more than his current contract.
Now that every team is fixated on OBP and OPS, it's another sign of Billy Beane's brilliance that he has switched gears, and will be riding the Reina Value from now on.

**** your asterisk.

Beane's alleged new M.O. is to go after undervalued defensive studs... so yeah, Pierre don't quite fit the bill.
You're behind the times, brah. Bud Selig sent out a press release yesterday about an amendment to the MLB rulebook that says Reina Value is now the final and ultimate measure of all things baseball. So while Beane bows down to the sublime power of Reina Value, he's got to look elsewhere for an advantage.
He won't find one.
