Vernon Wells was never on the market like the other guys, but your point is spot on.
Honestly, I'd argue Cabera is the single most valuable player in baseball right now. I'd much rather give a massive contract to a position player over a pitcher due to health risks, and there is no one that approaches his combination of proven performance and youth.

Yeah, I didn't want to sidetrack just to bash the Blue Jays for that stupid contract. They flat-out outbid themselves.

Sure. Maybe you could argue Pujols, except there's that ligament tear and the age allegations. David Wright is also a defensible pick... maybe Hanley, too.

Living in Toronto, the papers here were constantly publishing rumours that Vernon wanted to leave for Texas. Fans were panicking, afraid to lose such a "marquee" player. Our sports columnists basically declared that whether they signed him or failed to do so would signify how much ownership wanted to win.
Management was forced to sign him or risk losing tons of interest and support, so they pretty much had to agree to whatever Vernon's agent demanded. The entire situation was butchered by the media and the Jays, and that's why they're locked into a $126 million deal for an outfielder who posted a .706 OPS last season.
