The only reason the Cubs have pursued Roberts is because he's better than DeRosa. Lopez isn't, so I don't see why they would be interested.

So if they get Roberts, does DeRosa come off the bench?

That would be the plan according to Piniella, which I find utterly stupid. Derosa was one of the best hitters on the Cubs last year, and you will be starving your offense with him on the bench. Put him at shortstop to replace Theriot. He cannot be as bad as Theriot defensively, we already know he has a better arm, and he is WAY better offensively. Plus Derosa was brought up as a shortstop in the Braves organization, and has very solid fielding numbers.

Pinella loves Theriots nuts. It makes more sense for DeRosa to switch to SS and Roberts stays at 2b.

Yeah I always liked DeRosa and he had a great year last year. Hitting close to .300 with 10 HRs and 65 RBIs. Pinella's got to be crazy to bring him off the bench when he's capable of playing SS, which is the spot that needs to be upgraded.

If DeRosa can move to SS, that would be the best move for the club. Unfortunately Lou hasn't talked about it and seems entirely too content with Theriot.

Theriot does bring energy and good defensive plays, but not much more than that. I don't understand why everyone in the Cubs management adores him so much. Derosa brings great defense, versatility, and clutch hitting. It shouldn't be a search for someone better than Derosa, but someone better than Theriot. Lopez and Roberts are both better than Theriot.
Some other SS/2B candidates:
Jhonny Peralta
Brandon Inge
Yuniesky Betancourt
Rafael Furcal- doubtful Dodgers would give him up
Khalil Greene
J.J. Hardy
Hanley Ramirez- same as Furcal
Brandon Phillips- Hendry "Dusty, we got Jose Macias."
Dusty (drools) "What do you want for him? I'll give anyone for that old stud."
Hendry "Brandon Phillips."
Dusty "Ok."

So you actually thing those guys can be had in a trade? Like seriously? Last I checked, all of those guys have starting jobs without immediate replacements. And Hanley is be one of the best players in baseball who is being paid jack. mahalo

I'm sure the Brewers would gladly trade J.J. Hardy to the Cubs to let them put Ryan Theriot on the bench.

Now that the past year has gone by..........

You feel stupid about the comments you made about the Nationals being the worst franchise in baseball yet? Just wondering.

Manny Acta makes me regret anything. At the time, they had a horrible roster, they didn't move Soriano at the deadline and were stuck with two draft picks, and their minor league was in shambles. But hiring Acta, making some smart draft choices (like Detwiler, who I love), and making some wonderful trades for undervalued, talented guys with issues (like Pena, Dukes, and Milledge), the team is on the upswing. Ryan Zimmerman being an MVP candidate doesn't hurt either. At the time, I felt my statement was true and I will admit right now that I am a Nats fan right now. But there is a difference between saying that _____ is a horrible run franchise (when, in recent history, was true) and saying that Hanley Ramirez is available in a trade. Two different spheres of stupidity there. mahalo

Yeah, Hanley Ramirez being available for a trade is ludacris...

The Nationals have done a marvelous job of starting to build this thing from the ground up... Amazing work already done to the farm system which still has a ways to go... Probably the best draft in the majors last year getting three lefties in Detwiler, Smoker, and McGeary... Burgess as well as Jordan Zimmerman... Trading for Milledge was awesome... Acta is one of the top managers in the game... I'm loving how they're doing this and making progress so quickly...

Today was another greatly managed game by Acta with the 1-0 shutout of the Phills... His team has fundamentals, character, and they play damn good defense...
