Claudio Vargas Released - Mets Interested?

Post#1 » by Jakespeare » Fri Mar 28, 2008 1:18 am

Claudio Vargas reportedly cleared waivers on Wednesday after being released by the Brewers, and according to the New York Post, the New York Mets have expressed interest in signing the 29-year-old right-handed starter to fill the void at the end of their rotation. "That's a good name," Minaya said. "We're going to take a close look at him."

Vargas would give the Mets an upgrade over both of their current options Orlando Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey, both of whom have struggled immensely.

Vargas is 43-38 with a 4.95 ERA in five major league seasons.

Might be a nice pickup for the Metsies. Shouldn't be to expensive and is exactly what they need. An innings-eater. Between Pedro's fragile state and all the other issues including an over-worked BP last few years, he could be a good pickup.

Vargas is hardly an innings eater.

If by innings eater you mean 5 innings and 5 earned runs per game then yeah, he would be a good pick up.

Touche, triw7 and RBCV. I should correct myself by saying another healthy arm.

At what point did Vargas become a good option for the back of a rotation? He's never been very good, and a contending team probably shouldn't let him anywhere near their roster.

Pelfrey had an awful spring training with an ERA of 8.31 and I think it's premature to bring him up so early in the season. It appears to me that El Duque will be our 5th starter.

Look's like there not giving up on Pelfrey as he was named the 5th starter.

Yea he has some wicked stuff. He has command of a fierce two-seamer that hits 92-95 with late movement, but his problem has been his secondary pitches. His change is decent and he has a nice feel for it. His slider goes 84-87 with some nice late slide to add depth but often has trouble with his command of it.

Only because El Duque is starting the year on the DL. He'll come off in April and then Pelfrey will almost surely be sent down.

I don't know why they have been so dead-set on keeping Aaron Heilmann in the bullpen. The guy's got 4 pitches, he wants to be a starter, he's started before, he's got the composure; what's the hang-up? Can't he at least start for the first few weeks of the season and spot-start after that, so they don't have to give starts to a guy whose spring ERA was over 8?

He doesn't have 4 QUALITY pitches. He only has command of one of them.

Heilman has a disgusting change and a FB that sits in the mid 90s. He has a nice slider also.

Fine, you need to have command of three pitches. His slider is not very good.

Okay Mets fans, he's yours.

Just make sure if he makes a start on the major league club your sideline reporter calls him Clordio like ours did last year.
