Kind of a reactionary move. Yes, he had an awful April but unless he actually did fall off a cliff, as a platoon guy in left he was the best option they had. So they put Sheffield back in the outfield so they can what, DH Brandon Inge? The only way this actually helps is if Cabrera agrees to DH and Inge goes back to third at least part-time, or if Sheffield really does hit better when fielding, which I don't really buy.
