Blue Jays Reportedly Have Released B.J. Ryan

Post#1 » by jarrettjackfan » Wed Jul 8, 2009 7:59 pm

According to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian, the Blue Jays released B.J. Ryan.
A move was required to clear room on the 25-man roster for Scott Downs, who will be activated from the disabled list, but this comes as a complete shock. Ryan is still owed close to $15 million on his current contract that runs through 2010. The Blue Jays must feel he truly has nothing left in the tank. In 20 2/3 innings this season, the former closer had a 6.53 ERA and a 13/17 K/BB ratio.

He's done. Simple as that. He was coming into games only in blowouts and he was still getting lit up.

Kind of a shocker how far this guy has fell.

I understand after the injuries he was not even a shell of his former self, but man, he certainly tanked fast.

How many injuries was it? He had Tommie John if I recall correctly..

He Tommie John two years ago. He pitched last year for the Jays and looked very shaky but still got good results (32 saves, 2.95 ERA). This year though, he seemed to have lost everything in his arm. His velocity dropped and his slider which used to be practically unhittable was very flat and hitters were just teeing off on him. He also had control problems and seemed to lose confidence when things didn't go his way. The Jays tried putting him in in low pressure situations but it didn't seem to help, he just has nothing left.

I'm sure he'll resurface in a couple years on some crap national league team and do halfway decent. Natinals are looking for bullpen help right?

I remember debating with other Yankee fans about paying this guy closer money to be Mo's setup man. I'm so happy we didn't.

In his one season pre-injury, he was excellent...the first real closer the Jays had in ages. But after rushing back from TJ, he never regained his velocity, movement, or control. It's a lesson as to why you should never give out extremely large contracts to pitchers in general, and relievers in particular; one injury and they go from All-Star to scrub.

Sometimes a new location helps a player. Who knows if it will help him.
