Red Sox trade Mike Lowell to Rangers (for Max Ramirez)

Post#1 » by Dr Positivity » Thu Dec 10, 2009 3:14 pm

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Boston Red Sox have reached a preliminary agreement to trade third baseman Mike Lowell to the Texas Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez, sources told ESPN.

The Red Sox will pay $9 million of Lowell's $12 million salary. The trade was first reported by FoxSports.com.

A cash transfer of that magnitude would also require approval from the commissioner's office.

Passing a medical exam may not be the formality it is in many trades. Lowell, who turns 36 on Feb. 24, underwent surgery after the 2008 season for a torn labrum in his right hip, which drastically affected his mobility in the field last season. Lowell played in 119 games, but missed a dozen games when he went on the disabled list because of a strained hip.

Lowell also missed nearly a month at the start of the 2008 season with what was called a sprained left thumb.

Lowell, who attended David Ortiz's charity golf tournament in the Dominican Republic last weekend, said at the time that he had not "missed a single moment of sleep" because of rumors that the Red Sox -- uncertain that he would make a full recovery -- were planning to trade him. Lowell, who reiterated that doctors had told him he would require a year to heal, said he felt much better than he had last season.

The Rangers, if the deal goes through, would use Lowell as a right-handed designated hitter and part-time first baseman, a position he has never played in the big leagues. Lowell has played 1,470 games at third base, winning the Gold Glove in 2005.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona, asked last week about flipping Lowell to first and returning Kevin Youkilis to third, rejected that idea.

"I'm not for it," Francona said. "The guy has played third base his whole life. He could do it, but I don't know if it's as easy as people think, and I don't know if it's in his best interests."

Francona said moving Lowell to first base could actually increase the stress on his surgically repaired right hip, since it would introduce a whole different set of movements at a new position.

Ramirez, a 25-year-old native of Venezuela, was originally signed by the Braves and has played parts of the last two seasons with the Rangers. He is considered a better hitter than catcher.

Sounds like a strictly salary move for the Red Sox. No need for Ramirez with Martinez/Tek, barring a trade

If it goes through, they're going to sign Adrian Beltre to play 3rd.

Stash Maz in the minors for a year, then bring him up to back up Victor when varitek leaves. Who knows, I hear he has a good bat, maybe he can DH in a year too.

Good luck Mike. And thanks.

Yeah pretty much verifies that the Red Sox will sign Beltre soon.

he absolutely sucked last year, he was ravished by injuries but he's 25 and hardly hit above AA, plus i think a big reason we gave him up was because we dont believe in his catching ability (though the brief time i saw him, he was fine to me) it's a shame i had high hopes for him

still think maybe he can turn it around w/the bat but it's gotta happen soon

lowell at 3million is big for us, probably means we're about done for the off season (barring a major trade like josh johnson or maybe if we're able to scrum up money for a darren oliver) gives us a guy who can hit lefties which we need

I don't understand why the Sox would want Beltre. There are much better options that could be had.

Who? There's Figgins, but there's always a chance his walk rate will fall back to Earth and he'll be mediocre again, and he's all but signed with the Mariners anyway. Glaus is out there but who knows if he'll return to form at this point. Mark DeRosa could play third, but he's older, not as good defensively, and not really much better offensively. Melvin Mora's finished. Tejada could fall apart at any time.

Short of shipping prospects out to the NL to try to get Mark Reynolds or Ryan Zimmerman, or swinging for the fences for someone like Fielder, Beltre's about the best they're gonna do. And he's really not bad. If he can get his numbers back up at or near his 06-08 production--think .270/.325/.460 or so--that'll be acceptable seeing as how he's probably the best defensive 3rd baseman in baseball. Yeah, it's going to put pressure on the Sox to sign Bay/Holliday or find another productive LF solution, but that was probably true anyway.

The red sox did this to clear up money. As a sox fan it is sad to see mike leave after what he did in the 2007 world series but it's good for us to clear up some money. I would love to see the sox get beltre. He would help out solo much. So I'm praying

RT @AmalieBenjamin: Lowell has a torn ligament in his right thumb, source says. It appears that the deal to Texas won't happen after all.

Well, well, well.....

I'm pretty sure the Sox are very pissed for Lowell to not address after the season ended. He's only out 6-8 weeks, so a deal could be back on if he's 100% after that.

I'm sure they are. I know I'd be livid. It is almost as if Lowell did this on purpose so he couldn't be traded. All offseason he was saying he wasn't worried at all about being traded & that he didn't spend any time thinking about it. Maybe this is why. That's probably a stretch, but it just seems like his torn ligament was the ace up his sleeve so to speak for staying in Beantown.
