I think the Yankees subsidized this contract to price Joe Mauer out of the Twins budget.

The highest anyone else would've gave him was 85 million, this will look really bad in a few years. Especially with his defense so terrible, and playing in the NL.

As a Cards fan, I like it. Seven years is a long time, but Holliday is only 30, is a great athlete who stays in shape, and has been pretty consistent for the past several seasons. It's not a bad gamble that he'll be worth the contract IMO. It's fun to think about Pujols/Holliday at the heart of the order for years to come.

His contract seems about market-value to me when you look around at comparable outfielders. Maybe in this economy the Cardinals could have gotten him for a bit less, but why piss him off by low-balling him? Do you really want your cleanup hitter for the next seven years to be pissed off?

And what's this terrible defense stuff? Other than one bad play against the Dodgers, his defense has been fine.

Mauer's deal is going to be absolutely insane. I feel so bad for Twins fans. They're screwed. Even if they keep Mauer, paying him and Morneau 40-45 mil combined on a 60 mil budget is just death. They're better off letting Mauer walk than playing the NY game... and that's sad

Another Cards fan here. I'm glad to have him on board again and even the money doesn't bother me that much. Coming into the offseason I thought he'd get his $20m somewhere, and he's certainly $1.5m a year better than Bay. Also, the Cardinals are going to pay whatever it takes to keep Pujols. Sure, there's that awful drop in last years playoffs, but his defense actually stacks up well according to the metrics. Last season one of the Cards' biggest problems was other teams pitching around Pujols and Holliday did/will help that more than Ludwick. I'm really excited about an outfield of Holliday, Ludwick and a young and developing Rasmus. Time has proven that the Cardinals can get more than their money's worth from lesser players especially in terms of pitching, Penny could well be another example of Dave Duncan getting great production from a pitcher who hasn't been able to put it all together previously.
