You never played baseball did you? You don't sit on an offspeed pitch. You look for a fastball and adjust.
Not when you know a changeup is coming; and that was pretty damn frequently with Ramirez. His fastball velocity is average and his command of it looked below average (albeit it in a short stint) so he didn't throw it nearly as much as most pitchers throw their fastball. Hell, didn't he throw a 2-0 changeup to Navarro while he was struggling to throw strikes badly and the bases were loaded? Most hitters are sitting fastball middle-in during that situation, but with how much he throws that changeup, it looked like Navarro was sitting on the changeup (if it was a changeup, tampa feed had it a little faster than his typical changeup but about 5 MPH below his typical fastball--looked like a changeup that didn't drop like his usual change to me).
cmaff, I'm sure his control/command is better than it was against Tampa (and not pitching in 2 weeks hurt it a lot), but his minor league walk totals this year don't suggest he has real good command and it wasn't exactly great against the Angels either. I'd also rate his fastball below average for now, but I'm going off an extremely small sample size in the majors and nothing but stats in the minors. I'd rate his velocity very average, his command of his fastball below-average and his movement on his fastball as average as well.
I agree, I think he can be an average pitcher without a 2nd pitch as his changeup (most of the time) is pure filth. It just seemed to me, from what I've read, most Yankee fans expect much more than an average pitcher from him (aside from you, you didn't seem as excited about him as pretty much every other Yankee fan both on here and nyyfans) and were ready to pencil him in as a setup man and a pretty big part of the bullpen for the next 5-10 years.
