As a San Diego resident I’m stunned. We’ve never done anything like this.
Guess they figure he’s young enough to cornerstone around our up and comers.
Still going to be a rough season and still a low-ish payroll overall, oddly enough.

Sign Harper too (10x335) and have 2x 26yo locked in.
Trade for Trout — that’s right. Angels could float him since he has had some lackluster responses to their extension conversations. Padres have the #1 ranked farm system.
If Padres could add a front line SP — they could be favored team for many many years to come.

They really emerged late as a front runner, gotta give them props since this is what they wanted. I'm personally not a fan of these type of contracts but I can't really blame them, and they might have the most young talent in the West as we get to 2020. He also has the 6th year option if chooses to leave, I think.
OTOH, we may have seen this movie before. Alex Rodriguez in Texas...Stanton in Miami. Not usually big payroll teams who ended up deciding that they could no longer afford such a deal. Interested to see how the Padres do for the first 3-4 years.
