All I'm saying is there is a difference between getting 3 outs in the 9th and 3 outs in the 6th or 7th. The game is on the line. The crowd is often going nuts (unless you're in Pittsburgh or Tampa Bay) and every pitch is under the microscope.

No, there is no difference. You just need to get outs.

This isn't necessarily pointed towards you, but theres a reason why Bill James' closer by comittee didn't work in Boston.

probably because the bullpen...sucked? maybe? i don't know, why don't you explain it to me? did they not have the "closer mentality"?

there are some people better suited to closing a game, yes--a person who strikes out a lot of people and doesn't walk very many...

and btw the game is on the line all 9 innings, that's why you play all 9 and not just the 8th and the 9th 8)

Yankees up 1 run at Fenway in the bottom of the 8th, Farnsworth has to face Ortiz-Manny-Drew. Then in the 9th, Rivera gets to face Lowell, Varitek, Crisp or whoever is in the bottom of the order. Game on the line or not, I'd rather be pitching the 9th. And more often than not, it usually falls into place that way. That isn't to say that 8th inning guys are move valuable, it changes on a nightly basis.
