Why is that shocking? Greinke had an 18 fWAR in the three seasons prior to being moved. That's the price you have to pay for a pitcher of that caliber.

it's not.

The aftermath of what happened with the Brewers is.
Cain, Escobar and Odorizzi turned into [essentially] Jean Segura for the Brewers.

Greinke turned into Cain, Escobar, and a fraction of the cost for James Shields for the Royals.

Royals win.
Brewers misfire big time...but they got an NLCS trip out of it....i guess.

The aftermath isn't really that shocking either. That's the nature of those prospects for superstar type deals.

If you're surprised by this, there's definitely no way you're older than me. Anyone who has watched baseball for more than 5 years has seen enough of these deals to know how they go. You give away future production for present production. If the prospects pan out, it looks lopsided 5 years later. If they don't, it looks like a steal the other way. That's just how it goes.

How far down the rabbit hole can we go?

Cliffs on your position:
do baseball transactions shock you?

Cliffs on mine:
Yea, the ones that net you Jean Segura in the end and put the KC Royals of all teams IN THE WHIRL SERIOUS of all places.

this isn't just good deal v. bad deal.
this is Segura vs. a team plenty of us thought would never make it to the WS ever again getting a significant amount of pieces from that team.

The Giants got ripped off in the 2011 trade of their best prospect for Beltran, who left the next year...the year the Giants won the WS in 2012.

Posey was no longer a prospect in 2011, he was an established and upcoming star
