That is a lot of money, but I'm glad to see that Philly signed him. It shows they really want to keep the core of this team intact (Halladay, Hamels, Howard, Utley).

Wow.

By today's standards he's certainly worth it.

And this is the same team that refused to keep Cliff Lee for 9 million.

He still would have given them a ridiculous rotation for one season (yes, he's missed a few starts as it turns out but should be ready to roll in a few days). Afterward, his probable Type-A status would have netted the Phillies a couple draft picks. Instead they dumped him for a couple middling prospects because of supposed budgetary restraints. Yet they have no problem overpaying a 30 year old first baseman who's likely to decline well before the contract is up.

I don't think that's overpaying him. He played major roles in them getting to the World Series two years in a row, you know, the ultimate goal of a Major League Baseball team?

Fans don't seem to understand market value or how does the negotiating salary process work, the MLB doesn't have salary cap and thats puts pressure on teams all the times and most agents understand that and they make the most of it.

As for howard, hes one of the best pure home run hitters in the game, and statically hes one of the best hitters in clutch situations in the last 3 seasons and hes one of four players to hit at least 40 home runs and have 130-plus RBIs in four straight seasons. the others are Babe Ruth, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr.

If you ask me i think his market value is pretty darn close to what he's making now.

No one said hes ridiculously underpaid. when he hit 58 HR while making less than 1 million.

Why do people talk like Howard is a top 30 MLB player? Barely a top 10 1b.

I don't get it.

He has become a much, much better defensive first baseman over the years.

howard's defensive improvements is greatly exaggerated. He went from terrible to below average. Currently sitting at a -2.6 UZR/150.

He's Adam Dunn without walks on a winning team.
