Oswalt requests trade from last-place AstrosThe July 31 trading deadline is more than two months away, but one of baseball's best pitchers has asked to be put on the market.
Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt, a three-time National League All-Star, has asked owner Drayton McLane Jr. to be traded, a source said Friday.
Oswalt, 32, is in the fourth year of a five-year, $73 million contract that will pay him $15 million in 2010 and $16 million in 2011. His contract includes a $16 million team option for 2012 or $2 million buyout.
Oswalt, 32, posted 20-win seasons in 2004 and 2005 and has won 139 games with a lifetime 3.21 ERA in his 10-year career. Despite a 2-6 record, Oswalt has a 2.66 ERA for Houston while striking out 60 in 61 innings.
The Astros are in last place in the National League Central, and trading Oswalt could help them rebuild under first-year manager Brad Mills.
Oswalt hasn't pitched in the postseason since 2005, when his Astros were swept by the White Sox in four games in the World Series.

I would be very sad to see him go as he's my favorite Astro, but I'd love to see him get a chance to pitch for a team that has a chance to compete in the postseason, unlike my beloved Disastros.
I just wonder how much they can get in return for him.
Man it sucks being a Lastros fan.

Too bad, but the Astros might be very wise in the long run as Oswalt's best days may be well behind him. He obviously can still pitch, but if the Astros are still at the bottom of the tank by midsummer, and if the offer is right, he'll justifiably be gone.

They've needed to do that for several years now, maybe this year will finally be the year!

Don't see much of a market for Roy. Unfortunate for him.

The Brewers would love to pick him up, we'll take anything!

The Rangers would like to acquire him but with all the Bankruptcy garbage going on it would be at best the trade deadline before they could.

The Nats can afford him, but I don' see how we have the prospects to get him. A top of the rotation that looks like Oswalt-Strasburg-Livian would make for some fun baseball.

No we wouldn't and he wouldn't accept a trade here anyways because we suck too.

You wouldn't want Oswalt on the Brewers?
Interesting. Obviously it would never happen anyways. As you said, he wouldn't accept a trade there and I don't think even the Disastros, as terrible as they are, would send him to a team in their own division.

Really? The Brewers have some young, stud hitters on their team. I like their lineup a lot. If they can add some pitchers they'd be a contending team in the NL. I wouldn't call that "needing to rebuild".

Who? Braun and maybe McGehee? Fielder needs to be traded since we can't afford him.

I suppose if you're waiving the white flag as far as keeping Fielder than it makes sense. I would not be a happy camper if the reason i can't keep my young slugger is "we can't afford him", especially when the Brewers are behind the likes of Baltimore, Seattle, Houston, etc at 18th in the majors in player salaries with Prince ALREADY making 11 mil per. With Fielder the lineup looks nice to me. It's not like any of these guys are old vets or anything, they're young and some are still developing. Don't you still have Gamel waiting in the wings as well? It's the pitching that's the problem, especially with Suppan the highest paid player on the team. Oswalt would help but certainly wouldn't make the staff elite by himself.

Most knew that Fielder wouldn't be here beyond six years at most if he lived up to his potential when he got called up. Most of our revenue comes from ticket sales and we're pretty much maxed out there. Our TV contract is terrible (thanks, Bud!) and the ownership group wants to at least break even each year. I suppose we could afford him, but that would mean Melvin would have to stop spending money on relievers and soft-tossing 30 something starting pitchers, which isn't going to happen.
And it seems for whatever reason the organization hates Gamel. He got called up last year, barely started, got hurt in spring training and is now rehabbing down in Brevard County.
So yeah, we need to clear all the crap out (Riske, Suppan, Hawkins, Davis, Wolf, Hall) and trade Fielder because I certainly don't want to pay him what he'll command. Luckily most of that crap will be cleared out after this season.

What bout Weeks to the Brewers do have some nice young talented hitters and players on that team.

I still maintain that the Nats might be an attractive team for Oswalt and the Astros. Nats don't have a lot of long term salary so they could easily absorb the majority of his contract. And with Strasburg's debut last night, a 1-2 punch of Oswalt and Strasburg for at least the next 15 months would be pretty nice to have.
