Re: Yanks going after Cliff Lee?
I dont expect Lee to be in Seattle next year but they dont have to just ship him off for nothing at the trade deadline. The compensation that Seattle would get for Cliff at the end of the year, assuming he leaves, may be better than what teams might want to offer. I think it's 50-50 he leaves in July but dont bring junk to the table, the M's arent interested in that.

I don't see the Yankees going after him, but I'm going to wait on who will go after him until July, when I get a better idea of who is going to be in the playoff hunt.

Re: Yanks going after Cliff Lee?
No way in hell the Yankees have 3 over 15 million per year pitchers on their staff (I assume they'd only trade for Lee if they could get an extension & he'd command a lot of money). ESPECIALLY with Cano about to become a free agent after next season. Hell, I'm not so sure they'll go after Crawford anymore.

Ken Rosenthal seems to think Lee will end up with the Yankees. I just don't see how they sign this guy to big money when they have to sign Cano soon to a BIG deal. They've said they want to lower their payroll to around 185 million but I don't see how trading for then extending Lee does that.

Cano signed an extension last year.
I don't expect the Yanks to trade for any starters, but I do expect them to go hard after Lee in the off-season with Vazquez unlikely to return and Andy potentially retiring.

The contract avoiding salary arbitration, covers all of Cano’s salary arb years, and if the player option is engaged, will cover his first year of free agency. The details are as follows: In 2008, Cano made $3 million, he will make $6 million in 2009, $9 million in 2010 and $10 million in 2011. In 2012, Cano has that player option for $14 million with a $2 million buyout. If the option is picked up, Cano will have another option in 2013 for $15 million with a $2 million buyout.

Re: Yanks going after Cliff Lee?
i dont think the yanks will go after lee, first off they cant afford him and second why would they need him....there rotation as it is is prob the best if not one of them in the entire MLB. Lee would expect to much money from the yanks and the yanks i dont think would dish it out

I was under the impression those were team options. I can't imagine the Yankees gave Cano two player options like that after he struggled a couple of years ago and people were down on him.
4 years/$30M (2008-11), plus 2012-13 club options
signed extension with Yankees 2/08 (avoided arbitration, $4.55M-$3.2M)
08:$3M, 09:$6M, 10:$9M, 11:$10M, 12:$14M club option ($2M buyout), 13:$15M club option ($2M buyout)
This is according to Cot's Baseball Contracts, which I trust 100%. I'll try to find something that confirms they are player or team options. Plus, if they were in fact player options, the Yankees wouldn't be able to exercise the buyout so that doesn't make much sense.
EDIT:
According to the MLB.com article, they are team options as well.

Yankees can't afford him? They're most likely losing Vasquez after the year and possibly Pettite too, that's around 23 million off the books and 2 open rotation spots (assuming Pettite retires). Now I agree that they might not WANT to go after him if he wants around 95-100 million, but it doesn't mean they can't afford him. And the Yankees will probably let the market determine Lee's price. Let the other teams bid for him (much like Tex 2 years ago) and at the last minute swoop in and give a few extra million.

Re: Yanks going after Cliff Lee?
What he is looking for and what he gets are two completely different things. And Francesca is an idiot anyway, I don't believe a thing that guy says. He will get a similar deal to Lackey but probably get 1-2 million more a year.

Didn't they have a chance to pick up CC during his final season in Cleveland, but didn't. I don't see them really going hard after him and just waiting it out and putting a huge amount of money to him so he'll sign there.

Damn! Well, well, well guess I was wrong.
Cashman knew New Yorkers were mad about not getting LeBron so he pulls this off.
Seattle gets a STUD prospect. Montero will be the truth. I am convinced of it.

Mariners fan here.
Lee can go ahead and find a place in New York if it means us getting Montero. Thanks for the times, Cliff. You're a pleasure to watch.
..But Montero is gonna be a stud.
