i think that play was totally uncalled for, considering the score he should not have taken him out like that

i also disagree with scocia saying you play the game at the same pace despite the score, which isnt true as teams (generally) dont steal when they are up by 10 nor do they swing for the fences on a 3-0 count when they are up big

And why the hell would you disagree that you play the game at the same pace. Is it inconceivable that a team can come back from a 7 run deficit? Sure, it's not likely, but I don't buy the don't do hard slides or any of that just because you're up by a certain amount. Like it would be okay if you're up by 5 runs but not 6? Whatever.

It was an awful throw by the 1st baseman. If that's a decent throw, he doesn't even get hurt and this isn't even a discussion. He made contact with him on the base, he didn't go cleats up, get over it. It's baseball.

I had no problem with the slide.

1) baseball isnt a contact sport, so i dont see how your first sentence makes any sense
2) if your 2nd paragraph is true, then why dont teams steal when up big and swing for the fences when up big on a 3-0 count?

Unless there's a rule where the team trailing by a bunch promises not to come back and win the game, I could see it. However, I'm unaware of such a rule, so not stealing and not swinging for the fences on a 3-0 count with a big lead doesn't fly with me.

at best, that play is dirty(prolly not the case), at worst, that play is hypocritical considering the other rules of baseball(more like the case)....that was my point

All you need is one game to make it possible. Once again, if there is any chance a team can come back, then they should continue to try to score and play the game as if it was tied.

So unless the team trailing promises not to come back, a team shouldn't just stop playing like they normally do just because they have a lead. Baseball's unwritten rules be damned.

That slide wasn't dirty at all. Aybar just happened to be planted the wrong way because the throw was a bit wide. Looked like he had his plant foot dug into the bag and his back foot stuck in the dirt. He's lucky that it's just cartilage damage and not ligament damage.

I'm on twirly's side of this argument, too. Letting up early in baseball is a bad decision, being as one pitcher's decline in one inning could lead to a 4+ run swing for the losing team. Plus, big run innings for teams allow for shorter warmups in the pen for relievers, which can lead to bigger swings.

If I'm ever in the shoes of a big league manager, I'm playing the Steve Spurrier type of offense and not letting up until the last out is recorded.

I'd call the slide "unfortunate"
