Phillies trade Jayson Werth RF (.279, 13 HR, 50 RBI)
to Cubs FOR
Xavier Nady 1B/RF (.223, 4 HR, 19 RBI) and Ted Lilly LHP (3-8, 4.07 ERA, 75 K, 1.13 WHIP)
Would you do this trade as a Cubs fan?

Question really is why would the Phillies do that deal?

They do it because they have Domonic Brown waiting and they could use another starter. Werth will be a free agent after this season so it makes sense from their standpoint.

The possibility of Werth beginning to hit like he did in the first 2-3 months is enough for Philly to turn this deal down, not even considering the hole they'd have to fill behind Howard (especially with Utley out). Lilly isn't going to make the Phillies turn the corner and begin to play like they're capable of, a hot month from Werth certainly can do that. On top of that, the whole point of trading away Cliff Lee was to "replenish the farm system" because of the prospects they lost via the Halladay trade, so it wouldn't make sense for them to trade Werth without getting some prospects back.
This is an easy no from Philly. If this is all they can get in return for him, they might as well take their chances with him catching fire and kick starting this team & taking the 2 draft picks as compensation when he leaves.

I don't care if that's the best I can do for Werth then I'm keeping him. It makes zero sense to move Werth for Lily.

why would the cubs do this deal since werth is gonna become a free agent after the season anyway, if they wanted to have werth why not just wait until they can sign him and not have to give up nady or lilly even though personally i think the cubs are gonna get rid of lilly at the dead line

The Cubs have no need for Werth due to the fact they are out of the race.

It would save the Cubs some money, give them first dibs on signing Werth, and if they can't then they'll take the picks. Ted Lilly is grossly underrated here.

Can someone please change the title of the thread already? I'm tired of getting psyched out by it.

It'd save them a couple million to go from Lilly to Werth, given how much of the season's left. That's not so hot as the lead incentive to do this deal. Lilly can probably net them a couple decent prospects elsewhere, especially if Oswalt continues to be a pain with his NTC. Such a trade would save them
more money because Lilly's salary isn't big enough to be an issue.
Plus given Hendry's penchant for giving out stupid contracts, the Cubs having the inside track on signing Werth isn't necessarily a good thing.

i think he has skills to lift his team once in a while but might not be worth it at this price.
