OT- Strasburg needs Tommy John Surgery!

The Nationals are saying its very likely that he will need the surgery... Theyre still doing more tests to finalize it, but its pretty much a done deal.

Those bad mechanics caused problems sooner than most ppl thought... His mechanics should have been fixed in the minors before he reached the show, but the Naionals and MLB couldnt wait to profit off him... oh well... If he gets it now, he'll probably be back by spring training 2012... He'll still only be 23 going on 24 starting the season... Theres no question he'll be back from the TJ surgery... He'll be just as good as he is now, but if they can't fix those mechanics another injury is inevitable.

I feel bad for the him...it really, really sucks. My trainer (he's one of the trainers for the Yankees in the off season) has been saying this was gonna happen since last year. He said that Strasburg and Prior have the same EXACT release point. I don't know much about baseball mechanics so I can't comment, but it seems legit...especially after learning that Strasburg now needs surgery. I hope he makes a full recovery and is able to continue his progression...he has A LOT of talent and potential.

I feel bad for the Nats. It's obvious a lot of their future is tied to this kid. But the good news is recovery from Tommy John is excellent these days. At his age he should actually come back even better from this thing...

I've heard that in some cases a person's velocity can increase after TJ surgery but I also look at a guy like Francisco Liriano who is still REALLY good now, was damn near unhittable before he hurt his arm.

Regarding Liriano wasn't his slider during his rookie phenom season at like 94 mph? What is it at now? Also, Liriano is still nasty.

A lot of people always felt Strasburg was a strong TJS candidate with his mechanics. You simply cannot throw those devastating breaking pitches without putting a lot of tear on your arm.

Very sad for the few National fans out there. TJS is a 2 year recovery process when you think about it. One full year before you can actually throw and then the next season is usually a re-developing year.

A real shame.

Lets hope his recovery goes well, and somehow he's able to adapt his mechanics successfully.

His slider would sit around 88 mph and probably peaked around 90-91 mph. His fastball was typically around 94-95 mph as well. He's definitely lost some velocity on both of those pitches since his surgery. Liriano is really good again now, but it took 4 years to get to this point. He was very inconsistent up until that point. So much so that many didn't think he would ever be a starting pitcher again. So I wouldn't expect Strasburg to "fully" recover for at least 2 years.

There are some guys that have proved that it can be done:

Chris Carpenter
AJ Burnett
Ryan Dempster
Tim Hudson
Mariano Rivera
Billy Wagner

If he can regain his touch the arm should be alright.
