Stealing Bases

Why is it taboo to steal bases when down, I don't completely understand why this is? Can someone please explain.

If your down big I guess your not suppose to try anymore and steal. Why? I haven't got a clue.

A team that's behind should do whatever they can whenever they can to win a game.

Who was it earlier this year that blew a late inning 9-1 lead? Braves?

The idea as advertised is that stealing bases increases your odds of single runs and decreases your odds of plural runs, so when down, needing the latter, you don't steal because the out isn't worth the increased odds of a single run.

Not saying I agree with it...and James says stealing is almost always a bad investment, or at least he used to...but that's the age-old argument.
