Jeter and the Yankees

Jeter was offered 3 years and 15 mil, with no arbitration.
Apparently this is causing an uproar in NY.
I can understand the NY area's relationship with Jeter.....but can the Yankees really be faulted in the numbers?
The tact used is less than artful, but Jeter's continuing decline as a middle infielder is imminent given his age.

The media coverage of it is ridiculous, as is the 3/45 the Yankees offer as is Jeter declining it. He wouldn't get more than $5 million a year from any other team.

you are crazy to think no other team would offer more than 5 million dollars.

Crappy offensive year, crappy defender. Okay, some team may offer him more, but that team would be really stupid.

because jhonny peralta, jason baretta or marco scutaro are much better than derek jeter? There are some teams that Jeter can help. There are many team that can benefit from a business standpoint by having jeter on the team. I agree that at 15mil and above, Jeter doesnt make much sense for anyone but the yankees. Jeter at less than 10 mil is a bargain for everyone.

Did I say they were better? Other than Peralta (who also got overpaid) who is Jeter a better defender than? Maybe if he posted a solid offensive year you could make that argument, but he sucked on offense and defense.

I dont see how Bartlett or Scutaro is better than jeter.

And Jeter's offense doesnt suck. Not everyone is Tulowitzki Or Hanley Ramirez. Jeter is just about average offensively for his position.

A position that is complete crap offensively. And yes, a .710 OPS is crap.

Scutaro had a better year that Jeter. .333/.388/.721 with an OPS+ of 92.
Jeter with a .340/.370/.710 and a OPS+ of 90.
Not to mention a 17 million dollar difference in salary. That is with Scutaro having a bad season. Not to knock Jeter but he had a bad year.

Scutaro is marginally better than jeter, at best. I'm not suggesting that Jeter is 17m better than Scutaro. This debate started when the previous poster suggested that Jeter is worth less than 5-7m. I argue that at that salary range Jeter is a decent replacement at SS for some teams. As Red sox fan, would you not take Jeter at 5-7m over Scutaro?

As a Red Sox fan I'd pay Jeter 10m and move him to 3rd base just to piss off the Yankees

Heh. Yeah. Yankees got Clemens, they got Damon, it's time we take a big name from them. What was the biggest yankee we've had on our roster, Ramiro Mendoza?

He had a down year offensively, but I definitely think he's going to rebound. He'll be back up around .290-.300 next year. He isn't a crappy defender, he just doesn't have as much range as he used too. He defends pretty well on the balls that he gets to. And you're completely out of your mind if you think a team wouldn't offer him a 3 year deal for 6-7 million/year. Not only for the fact that he'd outplay that contract, but also for the fact that he'd undoubtedly bring more fans to the stadium.

For 5 to 7 million sure I'd take the chance that Jeter will have a better year than Scutaro next season. Of course we both know that Jeter is going to get a whole lot more than that which of course he's not worth.

1. He's 36. How many 36 year olds go back to what they were? He may rebound to a .750 OPS or something, but he's not going to be the at least .800 OPS Jeter that he was.
2. So he doesn't get to a lot of balls, but the ones he does get to he converts into outs. So in other words, he's a crappy defender.
3. Like I said, that team would be stupid. Why pay a guy that much money through his age 39 season? I also doubt he would bring fans to the stadium. He's a Yankee icon, he really means nothing to other teams.

Playing wise Jeter is probably worth 8M a year in free agency, but the thing is Jeter also brings marketability that a normal 8M free agent wouldn't bring with him so you also have to account for that. He will and should get over 10M a year.

Haha.. I was gonna bring this up as well..
I thought the yankees offer is more than generous.
Does he really think that any team will actually offer him anything remotely close?
I know the yankess are a different story.
But for any team and any sport, teams that pay for past performances rather than expected performances are the ones that stay in mediocre.
