perplexing move

1) Cash said he wouldnt surround pick last week
2) lots of dough for a reliever this late in the OS?
3) whats up with the opt out options?

considering #1, this seems like an ownership signing

4) this move concedes the weak SP yanks have and that wont be upgraded anytime soon, so the plan is to stack the pen

Giving up a pick to sign a reliever = fail

Giving a reliever anything north of a few million = fail

This signing = epic fail

That's hilarious. Just lask week Cashman said Cliff Lee was the only FA worth giving up the draft pick.

He has the option to opt out but the buyout is only $1.5 million. Not likely he opts out of that contract!

The Yankees signing a relatively well known name to avoid making their off season look like a total fail.

Yeah, it's ridiculous to give a draft pick and 35MM for a setup man, but the Yankees can obviously afford too.

Expensive but the Yanks have an amazing bull pen now. If they can't upgrade the staff, the bullpen is the next way to go.

Yup, this is pretty horrible. I mean I guess they have money to throw away but they could really use the pick.

Still, gotta admit their bullpen is looking good.

It's hard to put a lot of stock in how good of a year a bullpen will have. There is so much distortion with stats of relievers year to year. Last year no one thought Red Sox bullpen was an issue because how good it had been previous few years. No changes were made and basically the same pen that was so great in years past fell apart. Both Red Sox and Yankees went out and spent money on guys, whether it will truly pay off who knows.

Saying things to say things is fun.

Seriously though, if Soriano has a great year he will opt out and the Yankees will get the same type of pick (albeit in a different draft) that they lost this season. And if he does do great then one would assume the Yankees would have done great. And let's be real, its a lot of money but not NEARLY the money or years that were on the table for an older starter (Lee) who has a history of injuries. So if you were to look at both contracts without names attached most would think the Soriano contract was better. Yet the Yankees offseason failed because they DIDN'T sign Lee.

Bottom line: worst case for Soriano's contract is he gets injured and the Yankees are on the hook for 2 more seasons at closer money. Worst case for Lee's Yankee contract? Kevin Brown.

I know its the fun thing to do to hate on the Yankees and their overpaying signings but this signing will not hurt them long term. No kind of epic failure administered. Unless the draft pick is used on a hall of famer which it probably won't be.

I don't understand how the Soriano signing is an epic fail. He will be great for them. Now if you're trying to say that he's not Cliff Lee, ok I get it. But Soriano is a good reliever.

Nobody said Soriano was going to fail, just that it was stupid to give a reliever that much money and give up a pick for him. Relievers in general are just not worth that much.

Oh.

I didn't really know how he was doing, so I just figured he was pitching well and you were making a sarcastic remark.
