Brewers give Braun 100 mil from 2016-2020

What in the blue hell  This is one of the dumbest sports contracts I've ever seen

you better give me another 100 mil or I'm leaving in 2016!!! I mean it's not even like Braun is that young. He'll be 33 in 2016

Can you imagine Braun slipping to mediocrity either from injury or age in 2015ish, then you have a 5 year 100 mil contract still on your books! Well Vernon Wells got dealt so maybe they assume there'll be an out

Pujols is LOLing between this and Werth. Baseball contracts are officially broken

He's getting $10 million of that today as a bonus, the contract tops out at $19 million in 2016 and decreases to $16 in 2020.

Much of the money is deferred as well, so as to allow the team to sign more players and remain competitive.

Still dumb?

Braun is fast becoming one of the best hitters in all of baseball. Most years he will be a bargain.

Dumbest sport contracts? My mind is blown.

I don't think the contract is dumb, but is it necessary? He's signed for 5 more years. A lot can happen between now and then, and they'll get stuck with an albatross of a contract. It's puzzling.

I think this contract was highly unnecessary, but not dumb like Raf said. What I don't understand is why they won't give this type of money to Prince?

His numbers to start his career are close to, if not better (I can't remember off the top of my head) as Pujols's......too early?

Braun is a top 5 player in MLB, IMO.

Boras client. He doesn't let his guys sign deals without going to free agency first.

Well he does, Carlos Gonzalez did, but it's pretty obvious Fielder wants to test the market. He turned down 5/100 a couple years ago. It's not like the Brewers haven't tried to sign Fielder, Fielder just isn't interested in signing.

If Ryan Braun is a Top 5 player in Major League Baseball, then Donald Trump is the best candidate for president in 2012.

whats the point of signing him to this deal when he is already locked up for next 5 years? what is the hurry?

he'll be 32 when this contract kicks in, why not wait to see how he progresses?

im confused on that

I like Braun, and he's a very productive 4-5 WAR guy (though not even in the top-5 conversation; let's be real, here) on a very team friendly deal. This, though, is a bit silly...it's going to be extremely difficult for him to come close to living up to the contract in the final three years.

And for the sake of consideration here: let's say that Braun continues to hit at this level through 2014, and the Brewers decide to lock him up before he hits the market. Factoring in inflation and his age, what would be his price for those five years? Let's say that it increased to $130m, 5 years...a monstrous contract for what are most players' decline years even when considering the escalation of salaries, but I'm intentionally going high. As such, the potential upside for the Brewers is $25m in savings. However, the risk undertaken as a result more than offsets that potential windfall; he could decline earlier, he could get injured at some point in the next half-decade, and so forth. This could go wrong in far more ways than it could go right.

If it was structured such that the final three or four years were options held by the team, I'd love it; I fully understand the desire to lock up a player so that they play their entire career in one place. But guaranteeing that much cash so far into the future is complete madness.

$10 million of it is paid in installments from 2012-2015 and $18 million is deferred from 2022-2031.

Because if he progresses well as a player, he may not be interested in signing given other factors that may be present at the time. Milwaukee is a small market team, that has to be factored into the equation.

Pujols is the only clear person I can say is over Ryan Braun. Who else would you take over Braun? His offensive numbers are on par with everyone BUT Pujols, and he steals almost 20 bags a year and is a great defensive player.

I honestly can't pick 5 position players I'd rather have than Braun. No way.

Do you know who Ryan Braun is? A great defensive player? WTF. I don't even think Brewer fans are crazy enough to call him a top 5 player. Top 5 at just hitting? Now that he very well may be in.

Good call boys

In 2008, Braun led all major league outfielders with a 1.000 fielding percentage. He also led all NL left fielders in putouts (275), and was second in the league in range factor (1.95) and fourth in assists (9), in 1,310.1 innings.[168]

Braun led all NL left fielders in 2009 with a .994 fielding percentage. He also led them in putouts (304) and range factor (2.06), was tied for the lead in double plays (2), and was third in assists (8), in 1,364 innings.[172]

In 2010, Braun led NL left fielders in putouts for the third year in a row (279), was second in range factor per game (1.86), and 4th in assists (6).[138]

Off the top of my head (and as such in no particular order)...Pujols, Joey Votto, Ryan Zimmerman, Robinson Cano, Evan Longoria, Carlos Gonzalez, Adrian Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki, Miguel Cabrera, and Matt Holliday are definitely better. Jose Bautista is better if he maintains anywhere near his current pace. Carl Crawford, Josh Hamilton, and Joe Mauer are better setting aside current slumps/injury woes. Beyond them there are probably two dozen more who are in the same ballpark but aren't definitively better, plus probably another half dozen or more who are definitively better but didn't immediately spring to mind.

As for the defense...
