I am also surprised. And excited. I really think Weaver was generous with his hometown discount. He must've really not wanted to leave. I'm sure the Angels OF (Bourjos and Trout) defense played a role in him deciding to sign an extension.

Pretty decent deal for LA. Weaver could of gotten a lot more on the open market.

Damn that's a lot of money.

He's good, no question about it

Yanks are probably steaming right now.

Good deal for the Angels, though. If those top tier guys work out, they could be very scary in a year or two.

? have you seen his stats this year?

he wouldve easily gotten 125 mill on the open market, and with the yanks in it, pushing 150

It's a win-win for me. Happy the he signed in LA and wanted to play for the Angels and that the Yankee's didn't sign him.

A bit of a OT question but who would command more this offseason? Weaver or Verlander? Both are having monster years and I think easily would go into the $150+ range easily

That's a tough one (re:Weaver or Verlander $$).

I would have to say Verlander would command more money because his much bigger build seems more durable than Weaver. He's a few months younger than Weaver and if he loses 5 mph off his fastball down the road, then he'll still hit 91-92. If Weaver lost 5 mph off his fastball, he'd be a right-handed version of Jamie Moyer topping out at 84.

Both know how to actually pitch by changing speeds and showing good command, but I think durability gives Verlander the edge in overall worth/value.

And who knows, Weaver could end up the next Kazmir.

Verlander....who is having a Sandy Koufax type of year.

verlander easily

but you have 2 rich teams, aka tex and nyy, needing a top flight starter, either would get 150 in a bidding

Good on Weaver for sticking with the team who developed him. Not sure why Boras doesn't do this more often, doesn't he get like a 2% cut?

Could you imagine Weaver as the 5th Phillies starter? lol. Just playing. No way they can keep all five of them together for long...

He wouldn't be the #5, he would be #2 in my opinion.

Doc
Weaver
Lee
Hamels
Oswalt

I'd take Hamels over Lee.

1. Doc
2. Weaver
3. Hamels
4. Lee
5. Oswalt.

I think they both won with this deal. He will be dominate for a while and this will help the organization sell some tickets.
