The Offseason Thread: Bobby V to Boston

Post#1 » by Da Schwab » Sun Oct 30, 2011 9:50 pm

I figured this could be the miscellaneous news thread for the duration of the offseason. To start it off, here's the list of free agents, as submitted by teams today...

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/p ... gency-list

Between Albert, Prince and CJ Wilson, some teams will be spending quite a bit of cash in the coming months.

What's the chances that Pujols doesn't come back to St. Louis? Gotta be pretty low right?

I really think Albert is the type of guy to weigh his home popularity into taking less money to be endlessly happy. If he stays in St. Louis, he guarantees himself the opportunity to be competitive every year and he would be the chip to entice top notch managers to want the job after La Russa hangs em up.

If he doesn't end up back in St. Louis next season, then the FO will be cast into a witch hunt.

On another note, I won't really miss any of the guys on the Yankees' list besides Jorge. I can imagine that no team will want to sign him and he's probably going to retire and take a coaching job with the franchise. It's Montero's time now.

I don't really know what to think of the CC deal. I guess I'm happy he's staying.

Derek Lowe getting shipped to Cleveland for next to nothing was a bit surprising based on his name, but after the season he just had, it may be his swan song next year.

It's a lot of money, and the back end won't be worth it on strictly a performance basis. But in Yankeeland, where money doesn't hold the same marginal value as it does for the rest of the league, it's nothing particularly horrendous. There's a good chance he gets a similar (if not moderately better) deal on the open market, so if you're looking at the bright side, getting this deal done now means not having to give him 7/150 during free agency to keep him in pinstripes. Simply put, they're not competing next year without CC or someone of his caliber.

Derek Lowe needed to go. Atlanta will pay $10 million of his salary next season but he cost the Braves a great deal of games this past season. Atlanta needed to free up some money and they did by trading him (save $5 mill). I wish Lowe the best, but I wanted him traded from Atlanta two seasons ago, and Atlanta failed to pull the trigger last year when Detroit wanted him.

I think after Reyes, Pojuls and Fielder the biggest name on the market might be Yu Darvish. The kid looks like a work horse and will be sought after by a lot of teams.

It also looks like CJ Wilson is staying with Texas. Was watching PTI and they said that CJ has said there is a "great or good chance" he remains with Texas. So that doesn't leave the best pitchers out there. Going to be a interesting 5-6 months to say the least

I'm actually hoping the Yanks stay away from Darvish. He has Igawa 2.0 written all over him.

I really don't see the Cardinals as guarenteed to be competitive every year. How long do you expect Berkman and Carpenter to be stars? Berkman could be entirely average next year and no one would be surprised. Adam Wainwright has to prove he can comeback from TJ surgery. They have a stars-and-scrubs team that doesn't have the budget to withstand mistakes like the Yankees/Sox do.

If they sign Pujols, they look formidable for next year. But they'd probably be paying Pujols and Holliday somewhere around $45-50 million a year combined. Those deals could be disasterous down the line.

Mike Matheny has been tapped to replace TLR.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/72309 ... ew-manager

I'm really not sure I like the hire because of his inexperience. I'm also not sure that this hire will keep Albert in town.

Matt Kemp signs 8 years 160 million

Um, player who's had one elite year and who's had effort issues in the past and who isn't a free agent till 2012 - let's give him 160 mil! This one could end Vernon Wells bad
